Feedback for my testserver
#1
I've been reading some of your guides about rates, but I'm still not sure what everything will require. So before I move on with my own server I would like to hear your opinions. Here are some info about the server specs:

2GHz CPU
2GB RAM
10mbit upload

These are the rates I'm using atm.

-tickrate 66
+fps_max 600
sv_maxupdaterate 66
sv_minupdaterate 20
sv_maxrate 25000

Any suggestions? I'm about to lower the tickrate since I've heard it requires alot CPU.

What game are you hosting? How many slots?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. TF2 with 32 slots.

No way. TF2 is very very demanding. I would say maybe 20 or 18?

I've got a 24-slot TF2 server running on a 3.0ghz P4 with hyper-threading. When the server is full, the CPU runs high.

Well, I was more trying to find out what rates I should be using to host 32 slots. What configs do you suggest i should change? Or do you mean 32 slots is even impossible for my server specs?

I mean that I don't think 32 slots is possible. Atleast not at 66 tick. but i don't think lowering the tic will help the processor much.

Well the only thing you can do is keep the people from foreign countries away and keep as much programs down and refresh your server files.

And it should be okay with 20 slots you can ever lower your graphics for the sake of yourself. Smile

What does that have to do with the server at all?

I thought the same thing. That server will not run 32 slots at all. 10MBit line is not very good along with the poor specs. I think around 16 you can host. Good Luck

On our Q9300 (2.5Ghz) with a full 32 slot/33 tick, it uses around 60 - 80 % of one core.

I can host a TF2 server running 16 slots on a 1mbps line on a old computer that has 1.6Ghz, 728MB RAM and the servers FPS was steady at about 600 this was on windows.
So, I think he might be able to get more than 16

That's really pushing the border of ultra lag and poor quality though....
