How many game servers could this dedicated server hold?
#1
Title speaks for itself, here are specs:

Processor: Intel Xeon 2 x 2.8Ghz HT
Bandwidth: 1,000 GB (Can upgrade if needed)
RAM: 2 GB (Can upgrade if needed)
Hard Disk Space: 250 GB IDE (Planning on downgrading and more rpms)
Operating System: Linux

Other:
100 Mbps uplink port

I would be very pleased to hear from other people on what they think this server is capable of. Also let me know if I should upgrade anything, I am currently looking for Dedicated Server Hosts, and this is the best one I found that is very cheap. (I can post price and host if someone asks).

Thanks so much,

For the number of slots 2.8Ghz Xeons are rly quite old m8, maybe like 120 to 150. I have had problems with hyper-threading and srcds in the past, imo its best to turn it off. 1,000 GB bandwidth is only good for a couple of busy 32player servers. CentOS/RedHat seems to be the best when it comes to linux servers but we use Windows 2003 as the windows version of srcds is written better and is less problematic. Best not to use a 250 GB IDE hard drive if you are planning to run lots of game servers.

When it comes to renting dedicated servers (specially hosting games) it is best not to look for the "cheapest" host! Spend some money and get a proper server from a host that has a good backbone network/connections.

My recommendations for a proper server:
  • *2x Intel Quad Core Xeon
    *8gb ECC Memory
*SAS Hard drives (10k or 15k, 146gb or 300gb, if you got the money get 4 of them in raid 10 or raid 5, also look into SSD drives)
    *420 slots max

Budget server:
  • *Intel Core 2 Quad (Q6600 or better)
    *4gb DDR2 Memory
*500gb Sata2 Hard drive (bigger the hard drive platter is the less seek time for reading multiple files, 2 in raid 0 would be rly fast but has the potential to fail)
    *180 slots max

At least 2TB of bandwidth with 100mbit uplink with a backbone network that has connections with Internap. Internap good for gaming from what i hear.

Just to name a few dedicated server companies...
http://www.fdcservers.net - Best in unmetered bandwidth, good deals, they have connections with Internap.
http://www.softlayer.com - Quality servers with great options.
http://www.theplanet.com - Good pricing, they own their data centers.

Those P4 based xeons won't even come close to 100 slots anymore these days (maybe 80/90 or so)

I would say even 80/90 would be pushing it. When we had a core2duo E6600 90/100 was maxing the box.

I can confirm what blik said, my own E6600 was running mixed 100/75 tickrate and it pretty much maxed at 50 slots per core.
