I've never had a good expierence with a D-Link. The router itself doesn't make much difference when it comes to a server, other then if it simply doesn't work (which was the case with many d-link's I've used). The biggest factor is the speed of your internet and how powerful your computer is.. the router will make little to no difference when compared to that. But either way I'd recommend a linksys.

Like Branti says, you should avoid routers and use a gateway=>switch option, you don't have to forward ports if you put the server on the gateway computer, if you host one behind the computer you can forward ports from within windows, those always work.

so configuration with a switch would look like this :: ?? cable modem connected to an internet switch. and the switch would be connected to the server computer and the router, the router connected to two other computers on my lan?

I would NAT/PAT even with multiple IPs so everything can talk on a LAN personally. However having your server out in the open does make life easier. If you only have one router/firewall, I would DMZ the server within the router.

I've ran a little SRCDS server off my computer for a while using a D-Link. I just enabled DMZ on the computers IP that SRCDS was running off.

If you have multiple external IPs, giving the DMZ one and the rest of your network another would probably be your best option.
