Few questions
#1
How many slots would a e6600 + 2GB of ram be able to handle at 100tik, 66tik, 33 tik, (css). If bandwidth was not an issue.
In terms of hardware strain what does higher FPS strain, processor power right?

Is there noticeable difference after 512 fps (windows box). Velocity servers are starting to advertise 1000fps, is that a load of crap or anything?

thanks

edit1 : whats the best way to FPS boost a windows box?

the best box will have the most consistent fps rather than going all over the place. if you can reach 1000fps but are bouncing between 30-1000 then the box that is doing 175-250 will be better. of course it's easier to stay consistent with a lower number of slots.

Anyone advertising for 1000FPS servers is bullshit, it's possible to run at 1000FPS but the servers will be highly instable and of MUCH less quality than a 512FPS server, for as far as I've tested, anything above 700 can and will drastically decrease performance on the server.

On windows, you can simply open the windows media player to boost it, or what I prefer since it uses less resources, the srcdsfpsboost.exe which you should find on these forums when you use the search.

The E6600 will hold 100 slots total (50 slots per core) at MAX, calculated for 100 tick

Alright besides Boosting the fps or increasing the priority of the core is there any other way to increase performance? Cuz now a days, getting a server through velocity is not worth it. spend 50 dollars more and get your own box. Smile

I do have ever have a 30MB down/ 5 Up at my house, on average its about 10-20ms higher ping because of the hops, do you think this can cause performance lag? or should try to split the cost of a dedicated box and go that way?

Well if you don't download stuff all the time at your house, 5mbit upload is quite a bit for a home connection, it should be able to hold quite some player slots if you host on that.

Just make sure you don't upload e-mails and stuff at the same time cause it'll go amok in the server.

Alright well a quick update. colocrossing is giving me a phenom I am not sure yet if its a 2.2 ghz or a 2.4 ghz. + 4GB of ram. how many slots would this hold? and which would be better a phenom or q6600 in terms of server use? I know the q6600 is better in desktop applications. Of what i heard the phenom @ 2.4 would be faster but im not sure yet.

I'm not quite familiar with the phenoms, I do know that the Q6600 can push up to around 200 slots at 100 tickrate.

EDIT: Read some reviews, seems a phenom X4 overclocked to 3,0GHz gave the same performance as the Q6600, in that case i'd go for the Q6600, last thing you want to do is overclock a server. Same goes for the phenom X2 in relation to the C2D E6600

The Phenoms should be great too, I'm sure you'll have great fun with them, just keep the Phenom, no-one like bitching Toungue
