Cutting out the deadwood
#1
Hi,

Just downloaded the files for CSS, and the folder is just over 1GB. Looking inside, there are a lot of things that seem 'unnecessary', e.g Sounds.

What files can I safely remove in order to lower HD space used?

Thanks.

You could cut out some maps, but keep in mind each time a sound is called the server will generate an error if they are removed.
I dont believe users will hear gunfire, etc. I could be wrong however.
Can anyone answer that?

I actually never tried removing parts, I think sounds are triggered client side but I'm not sure if they have to be loaded on the server in order to send the info to the client.

Maps you will need for sure, I guess best way is to test it, one thing I'm sure of is that you get loads of errors Big Grin

I'll test removing the sounds. The only reason I can see they might be required is for sv_pure checksum calculations, however if this is the case, a list of file checksums would be far more efficent...

Okay, removed sounds and restarted server, all seems fine, playing for a while with bots with no side effects. Added -condebug to launch options and the console reports no errors at all.

So we don't need any of the sounds that come with srcds since they are already on the clients computer?

That's always the case, the server just sends the info to the clients to play the sound, you don't actually get the sound from the server.

In this case we thought the server needed the sounds to load up but it seems it doesn't load them Smile

Sounds are not needed, and materials probably not either.

Models are probably needed for collision data. I only tested sounds, feel free to experiment yourself Smile

The only problem is that when the server updates, it will re-download all of the sounds etc that are missing, and I don't know of a work around to this.
