Noob trying to make a TF2 dedicated server
#1
Question
Ok so I was thinking of making a dedicated server for Team Fortress 2 with some of the old computers I have collecting dust in my house. I also have FiOS with a DL of 15mb/s and an UL of 2mb/s so bandwidth is not an issue. Smile

Is a server difficult to set up?
What are the requirements for the PC that is running the dedicated server?

PS: Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am eager to set this thing up.

Setting up a basic server isn't hard.
Requirement? I would say read around, but you probably about a gig of ram and the better the possessor the better.

I'm VERY board tonight, so if you hit me up on my listed AIM SN, I'll be glad to try to help you out.

Well, 32 TF2 isn't supported, so you probably want to stay with a 24 man server.

Is it ok if I use Linux? I have never used it before and would like to use if for experience. I also hear things run faster on it. Also Windows 98 is giving me problems right now so I need to install a new OS on it anyway.

Edit: Which version should I DL: http://www.linux.com/download_linux/

For a beginner, Ubuntu is normally recommended.
However, as I said when we talked, you are going to need a stronger computer to run a TF2 DS

Just a small note, that 2mbit/s upload won't get you any higher than 16 TF2 slots @ 66tick
33 tick you would be able to go 24 players

66/33 tick? What is that? Is it like the performance of like FPS (Frames Per Sec.) or report rate or something?

tickrate is the refresh rate of the server, like how many times it thinks and sends an update to the clients.

33 tick is default, the higher you put the tickrate the more quality you get, however the higher it goes the more resources it will use.
