SRCDS Hosting

Ok so I have a question... I have a server box site where I can throw up to a gig of space on it. If I throw my server on there would I be able to host it? By host I mean turn the server on so it runs off of the website, someone once told me that all that I would have to do to host off of a website was add the website URL in my config or something of that matter. If anyone knows please let me know thank you Smile

Err you are mismatching two things: gameserver hosting and webspace hsoting.

Your friend certainly spoke about the sv_downloadurl-feature of HL and Source, enabling gamers not to download via the slow trickle map download but with full speed from a webspace where you put all your maps.

But it is impossible to use a simple webspace as application server Smile (or gameserver hosters would go bankrupt ^^)
It's like trying to install SRCDS on a flash stick, and believing that you got a running gameserver in your pocket Smile

Btw: SRCDS takes about 2gigs of space Toungue

Many flash sticks can hold more then 2 gigs but your totally right in saying that Rooster has game servers and websites confused lol.

I didnt talk about USB-Sticks when I said that SRCDS takes 2gb, but about his webspace (he says he got 1GB webspace)
But I think in a few years I'll have to revise my sentence: some crazy enterprises are working on servers the size of an thernet jack... (and integrating one ^^)

Look at todays bladeservers, they are 1 step in the direction of making things smaller.
Same goes for barebone PC's or mediacenters..

Blade servers are a nice idea but I wouldn't recommend getting one now. They require much more power and create a lot more heat, it's been proven that the amount you save on co-location does not make up for the cost of power just yet. One day though Big Grin

Back to the OP's question Smile

Unless you have complete control of the box you have your webspace on you will not be able to run a game server. It is definitely possible to host webspace and run a game server on the same machine though.
