I run a dedicated box for my clan at the momant. Here are the specs on it
Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz
1GB DDR2 Ram
320GB harddrive
100Mbps Up & Down
Well I have been trying to explain to my players that 100 Tick and pubs don't mix the best. From my reasearch it can create inner game problems. So I am trying to tell them we should keep our pubs at 66 tick so they run smoother.
My question is can anyone explain in detail why we shouldnt be using 100 tick on our pubs so I can make my team better understand were I am coming from. They complain that it slows game play, such as crouching, which I have never even heard before.
On a side note, our new box I never had to recompile or even mess with the kernel it was hitting 1000Fps right off the bat, my first box that I never had to do anything with it, first time ive used fedora core 7 so that could be why, usually using the older fedoras or centos.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

100tic at 250fps is good for a pub. High FPS for a pub is not usually a good idea
you want it you to as stable as possible. so maybe shoot for 100tic 500fps.

Btw:
the diference between 66fps and 100fps is, that clients stream the data 66times per second instead of 100, and the server aolso parses them 66times.
Slow crouching has nothing to do with that, as the human eye is only able to distinguish 25fps, so I would like to meet somebody seeing a difference between 66 and 100 (apart from the data in net_graph
)
People telling you that you shoot better on tick100 is crap -at least in public, except if the tick66-server is set to 66 to hold more servers and is on its limit
Anyhow: on tick100 you got a few mesy door bugs (which are STILL unfixed...) and when you don't want to mess with phys_scale just set to 66 to have a smooth and nice running server
A small hint to get everyone happy: change the "Tick: xxx" in manu against "Tick: 100" -most people will believe they are on a tick100 box and afterwards tell that they had better stats than on a tick66

Thanks for the reply guys, ya I run all our pubs at 330Fps, and our match servers at 500.
I just thought it was funny that the kernel didnt need a recompile. Any time Ive recompiled to 1000Hz the server would only hit 500 max, but 1000 right out of the box surprised me.
Ya ive done enough research to know that 500 is the best for optimal performance on private servers. Any other suggestions or points as to why 66 tick is better for pubs im all ears. I know even in Whispers faq's it says 100 Tick shouldnt be mixed with 18+ slots.

10 slot i would go with 100 tickrate. I have three 20 slots public at 100 so i guess i should change them...

An other idea: less traffic
Theoretically you should have around 1/3 less traffic, in reality it's less as user-side can't send updates 100 times per second (usually around 60-70, depending on connection and hardware)
But I guess thats only interesting if you got to pay for each gig, while i guess that most decent rents and colos got plenty traffic on them for CS:.S
Btw: I had to force my cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate to 66 or Wine wouldnt be able to handle the requests (FPS tropping below 10 ^^) I got around 40-50 which is plenty to play public
DEBIAN+GNOME+WINE 4 EVER
A last "greener" argument: when you have tick100 you need more cpu-load, and thus more enery.
So if every player on the whole world stopped overlocking his CPU/GPU and played dos-games you would probably have less CO2-emissions *g* (I guess it would not be mesurable but at lest it sounds like a good argument
)

$90 shit theres companies charging 100++ for match servers, but I guess to each there own, most of them don't even no what rcon stats is to even check to see if the server is hitting 2000Fps lol j/k.
Thanks for the input guys, even the creative ones lol...

I vote that d4f had the best idea.

How can you feel a difference? 1000FPS makes the engine more unstable.

on a proper machine with the right configuration, its stable as it gets.
I have my own dedicated box running 977fps stable. cpu doesnt go above 40 on the one core. occasionally it dips down to 750 or so but you don't notice it.
try a summit test server. They are as good as it gets.
