as the subject says. it's just one thing i've always wanted to know.
i'm guessing it will be a hefty chunk of text so a link to somebody else's doings would be satisfactory

My short version is: SRCDS runs the Source engine and connects to the Steam "Master List." When people are searching for a server, they look at the Master List and say pick your server.
SRCDS just connects to the master list and runs the Source engine, I am pretty sure. This is just my understanding of it there could be more to it.

if you've seen the any of the matrix movies, a game server is not all that different. it runs a version of the game that handles the entire world for each client connected.
that's the 2 sentence explanation.
