fps_max

could some one please explain this command to me -fps_max.I know the higher the number set the higher the fps ,but what should it be set to and how does -fps_max affect CPU usage.
eg if I am running 66tick servers with a few mods like mani on them should I set it to 600 or is the default fps (250fps) that srdcs runs fine.
also bye not having high enough fps for the server will it cause lag,choke or loss?.

FPS = Frames Per Second

In the server world is that (just like with your monitor) the amount of "refreshes" per second, only the server FPS is determined by mostly the CPU instead of the GPU in games.

The more FPS you have, the more accurate applications run (since you have more refreshes).

The SRCDS its tickrate is directly bound to the FPS (up to max 100 ticks, depends what you set it to, default = 33), if your server FPS is 60 the tickrate is 60 (if set to 100).

So that's also basically what happens when the FPS gets too low, it drops the tickrate, when it goes below 20 you'll get lag problems due to insufficient updates from the server.

Also just a quick note, it's +fps_max, not - Wink

I always keep the FPS at 512, it's very stable and the default maximum you can get out windows (on newer processors), ideally you should keep the FPS 200 above the tickrate to be sure an FPS drop won't do much with the server.

so bye settling fps max 600 should it sit on 512fps constant ,because its fluctuating from 460-512 fps.
the reason I ask this is because one of my server gets kind of graphic glitch and sound delay not a huge delay but enough to notice.but I think it may be a mod that is installed on the server.
so just to get this straight ,if I run servers on max fps 600 is that going to eat up CPU usage?

No it shouldn't eat CPU usage, it's just setting the timer different which gives the cpu the ability to give that FPS, it shouldn't have any impact on anything other than the FPS.
