recently i upgraded my computer from an athlon 64 3200+ 1GB pc3200 dual channel ram to athlon 64 x2 5600+ 2GB pc6400 dual channel ram.

about six months ago i hosted a cs:s server on the 3200+ with 20% cpu usage tops. now with the new system it uses over 50% of my cpu even though it's about 4x faster than my old one.

the main issue with this is quite often the server hits spikes where everyone everyone moves around quite ruggedly for a second or 2. not sure if this means anything but the fps on the old server was about 180 and droped to 60 ocasionaly but the new one is about 60 fps and drops to 30 regularly.

any ideas on what could be wrong is much appreciate.

Bandwidth change? Did you change the hard drive or installed or uninstalled something recently? Are you running FPS Booster?

i think i have found the solution. i just starteed up a pure server fps is about 60 but its idling on 0% cpu rather than 6% . maybe it was all those event scripts i dunno i'll have to do more experimenting.

while we are talking about FPS what is it in terms of srcds and what does FPS booster do?

FPS is the same as on clients "Frames per Second"

except on servers it's generated by the CPU instead of the GPU
The higher the FPS the smoother the game is untill the point of 700FPS (512 is best for servers if you ask me)

FPS booster changes the windows timer which will make your server able to run 512 FPS.

sweet fps booster seems to have fixed the lag spikes it now cruises at about 256 fps (is that good for my hardware? couldn't help but notice its not 512 )

if there are any disadvantages with fps booster plz let me know cause there must be a reason its not a default thing.

oh and are there any other performance tools i should know about?
