Compatible Routers
#1
Is there a list of which routers are compatible (able to forward enough ports) to let SRCDS work. I have tried lots of things, forwarded and tried using the DMZ portion but nothing works. I was wondering if there was a list. I have a Dlink DI-524.

D-Link and linksys are the routers with most problems of them all, mostly they don't do anything, sometimes dmz works but that's already on a rare occasion. You could try update the firmware see if it works then but I doubt it.

Routers that do work:
More professional routers work perfectly, so anything is good, just don't one of the average home use routers, they are not made for advanced use like running servers etc. Yes this will cost more than 40$, quality isn't cheap (I paid 120 EURO for an 8 port switch, which isn't even a router... router costs even more.

heh, I just used an old hp i had setting around, installed smoothwall on it hooked up a cheap-o switch and my network has ran better then it ever has. Built in firewall, you can even enable a dmz network (a real one) and all sorts of stuff. then I threw my router out a window Toungue

My definition of old is a p3 533Mhz I believe 256mb of ram and a whole whopping 3 GB hard drive Smile I didn't think my old gateway d3? would handle it.

You can set up SRCDS on any router that supports port forwarding. There may be issues if you are forwarding a range of ports. You can also use the free and opensource DD-WRT firmware to turn any home router into an enterprise class router if you have a supported model.

DD-WRT: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php
Tutorial: http://lifehacker.com/software/router/hack-attack-turn-your-60-router-into-a-600-router-178132.php

EDIT: I use a 3 year old, $40, Linksys WRT54G wireless router with the DD-WRT firmware and it works great. If you need it I can post a screenshot of my port forwarding setup when I get home. I should also mention that hacking your router like this, does have the possibility of bricking the router if you screw something up.

That's the exact same thing I did, it works great and owns all other setups there are in this world (well except for some cisco stuff)

The only reason why just any router won't always work, is because some routers will open the port, but forward some random port to that internal port. Which makes it hard to use. Usually the router will infact open the port, and allow connections. But a lot of times it forwards like 68005 to 27015, and the port always changes. Which makes it a pain to use for game servers.

Smoothwall is still the way to go Toungue
