128 Slot Bot Server
#1
Yup.. thats right, i want to do it, now i need to know what i need..

What OS, Hardware, Software, Etc!!!

Recommend only things that exist Smile

Want to run it at 100tic, etc.

Recommend also hosting services, thanks.

The goal is to see what is needed for such a server, then from there setup a massive zombie server. Thanks for the input.

You may want to do a little research on large slot bot servers. Most all of them are completely empty and just sit needlessly. Especially zombie, those take real players and decent admins. 100Tic, forget about it. Good luck.

1. maximum slots for 100 tickrate is 18.
2. 128 players is not supported by the engine
3. there is no CPU available at this moment that can support 128 players in 1 server
4. there is no CPU available that can run 128 BOTS at all
5. Even if it was available you wouldn't be able to afford it Toungue

128 is supported by the use of a plugin that bypasses all caps, tested and works, even with 100tic Toungue,

so far, on a pent d 3.0, 2gb, 100mbit weve tested 70 bots plus 10 clients, at that point it gave out.. so its true we do need a more powerful cpu then a pent d 3.0, im sure a quad cpu would handle it without problems, i do have a friend who could test this,

as for it being empty, i doubt that highly, i got 3 servers of 30 slots each, 20 bots each, 10 clients each maxed out 24/7, my idea is simply to turn 3 servers into 1, 30 vs 60 would be decent enough, and yes its possible if the pent d could do what i said above.. and yes i can afford it because i have enough willing donations.

Hmm.. seems im only helping myself here Toungue

It's confirmed that no server above 18 players can support 100tickrate (maximum quality), there's no way you can go higher than 24 without visible ingame issues.
"it works" has a lot of definitions, if you monitor the actual tickrate I'm sure it's below 10, no matter what you set it to.

As the SRCDS is still ONLY usable on 1 core, it does NOT use all 2 or 4 or 8 cores, just 1. You need a processor with highest possible GHz, as I said there's no CPU that has a single core fast enough to run that many players at the same time in the same server. (Example: core 2 duo E6600 (2.4GHz) can have a total of 100 slots at 100 tickrate divided over 6 servers utilising BOTH cores (3 servers per core))

I like the idea don't get me wrong, it's just not realizable at this moment, even IF you had the CPU, the engine can't hold it and go whacky. (look at the HL2 netcode, it starts tripping above 32 players)

and then there's the IF IF IF IF everything runs, 80% of the players can't run the game due to FPS lag.

ya i guess for sure client side it would be impossible.., specially the way the engine is made.. kinda sucks but oh well..

but what u said about it only using 1 core gets me confused.. lets say u have 4 servers.. and a dual core.. how do u know what core those 4 servers are using.. and how do u set the core they use 0.o

...?

It's a little application windows has, in the taskmanager (cntr+alt+del) you can right click a process and then click "Set Affinity.."
You can select the core/processor to be used there.
If you don't use this, windows will start juggling around with the SRCDS processes between cores which will highly decrease server performance but SRCDS will always use 1 core.

wow, this ive never known but explains quite a bit 0.o, thank you for that info.. im well into the css server community but ive never known this.. is this something thats a secret? ull never hear this in all the tutorials and help u get.. ur smart Smile

well as far as i know the opterons have the fastest cores, hard to say though.. with new tech' it could be that a quad cores single cpu is faster than any other solo cpu..

thanks for clearing that part up, but yes it woudl be good to know what the fastest cpu is out there.. and say for 4 servers with 30 slots and 20 bots on each server, what would u recommend for a cpu?

Well it's not a secret, just many people don't know of it or think it's useless in a way.
But feel free to tell everyone you know about it cause it's pretty important when running servers on multiple core CPU's!

The most fast CPU available at the moment I think are the Core 2 Quad Extreme's from intel, with clock speeds of around 3GHz per core on 65nm architecture it beats pretty much everything as far as I know. Although there will be new architectures soon, I believe it's 43nm??? So we'll see even faster. Also the extreme's run on 1333MHz FSB where most CPU's run on 1066MHz.

All the available quad cores at this moment should be (if not easily) able to hold 4x 30 slots.
I recommend Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz, it's fast, reliable and most important it has a really low price and maximum performance.

Now when you look into "real" server (like 1U/2U servers) you'll be looking at Quad core Xeons or Opterons going up from 400$

I know one that can hold 70 slots per core. But technically its not quad core.

is there a dedicated server hosting service ud recommend that would have hardware similar, or that could support as such (4X30 w/ 20 bots a server), prices about under 200 a month, btw im in NA, so prices here are alot cheaper than most places Wink
