HIGH choke
#1
my friend is running a 10 slot server from his comp. he has a 512 upload speed (10 slots is a little much i know). everyone in the server complains about high choke. most say its at about 50, i get about 30-40. whats causing so much? here are our rates:

sv_maxrate 8000
sv_maxupdaterate 100
sv_maxcmdrate 80
tickrate 80

ive tried alot of things recently to lower the choke and nothing seems to help. ive raised the rate up to like 20000 n sometimes it seems to drop but it still goes really high at times. i told him that we should make it 8 slots and put a higher rate but he doesnt want to. if that is the solution i will have it done though.

What you need is indeed higher rates, but with 10 players and higher rates you'll get ping/bandwidth lag so it's either running choke with lower tickrate or having no choke, stable tickrate with lag from bandwidth.

really 10 players 33 tick small chance but at a tickrate of 80 is impossible, 8 players at 33 tick runs smooth and for good quality game this really is the max that connection will hold (I have the same).

Seriously tho, as what many people think choke is bad and it makes the game bad, this is so not true. Choke is simply the packets waiting in line to be transfered from or to the server, it won't do but ANYTHING at all until a certain level. This level is reached when the tickrate starts to drop, only at this point the server will get affected.
I've seen 100 tickrate servers running perfectly fine with a choke of 70

okok so your telling me choke isnt all that bad of a thing? i had the impression that anything over 0 was bad for gameplay. i mean i dont really notice anything bad ive just been told its bad lol and ppl come in the server saying how high their choke is and complaining.

Yes, a lot of people complain about it, but the truth is it doesn't change game play and performance in any way as long as the tickrate stays up.
As I always say, people should shut their mouths if they don't know what they're talking about.

Yeh well those really are the people that piss me off, when I'm having some nice game and some guy comes in, reads the numbers from netgraph and immediately throws "FUCKING LAG IN HERE!" to my head. I tell him it doesn't lag and if it does it's his problem but they keep holding ground and keep telling me I'm wrong...

Same goes for server admins that think their server is the best and because they are the admin they are god therefor know all. (Server name says it's 100 tickrate) I join the game, yup, 50 tickrate instead of 100. I tell the admin it's running at 50 tickrate, they get mad and say it's at 100 tickrate, while it obviously isn't. They pay 50$ a month for something that they don't get. So I say well it's your problem, you're paying for it. Next thing I get banned for gently telling them there's something wrong with their server.

There are a lot more of these things going round, I just say "fuck you moron, suit yourself" Smile
If they know it so well, let them live in their fictive world, best you can do about them.
