Choke in big servers
#1
Hey guys,

this time it's not me giving the answer, I have a question for you!
Since I've never worked with either dual core or big servers I'm kinda running into some trouble now.

I'm running this 20 player 66 tick server on a Core 2 Duo E6600, I've set the affinity to core 1, changed priority, no Hyperthreading running, pretty much all I do to make a server work.

maxrate = 30000
minrate = 10000

now the problem is I'm getting choke, lots of it, it makes my tickrate drop and messes it up till it runs at 33tick in the hot times and decreases when more ppl die again. I pretty much checked everything, core 1 is at 5% load, FPS is at 512 all times, memory is like 4% in use etc etc.

Am I missing something here or what?
It's connected to a non limited 1gbps connection.

Specs:
C2D E6600 2x2.4Ghz
1GB DDR2 800MHz
320GB Sata-II (might this be the problem, seems weird to me tho) used total of 10gb
Asus P5B motherboard
1Gbps connection

Any advice?

Alright I seem to have found the exact problem but no fix as of yet, I'm only getting 10 FPS on the server, god knows why

I run the booster, when I pause the server the FPS is at 512 (thats why I never saw it being at 10), when the server is running normal I get 10FPS!!

CPU at 5%, RAM isn't full etc etc, I'm stumped guys..

hrrm, little update

I installed a new HDD and tried on that one, also didn't help. If anyone has just 1 idea please tell me cause I really need this wednesday!! 2500 people are counting on my service again but with this new hardware it doesn't work!

FPS is the problem, it's like 500 then drops to 10, stays there for a while, goes back to 500 and drops again. It just doesn't keep a steady 500, I don't get what it could be.

you don't have any intel throttling or such software that manages the cpu speed (speedstep or whatever its called now) or a setting in the bios that does the same do you?

No I turned off a setting called C1E which decreases the multiplier to save power, still the same result.

I think it might be the current OS build of winxp pro (june)
Since I've never had it on my older one I'll install it tomorrow see if that is any good to me.
I just hope I get this fixed REAL soon.

Anything is welcome even if you have the smallest hunch!

EDIT: OS reinstall didn't work.

Hey Dude ...

I'm having the same problem ...

Server information:

E6400
3GB RAM
Intel NIC 100 MBit
Location: Frankfurt (Main) - Atricom

And my server also have Loss and Choke but I also cannot manage it and solve the problem Sad

And a reinstall of the OS didn't help, too.

OS was Fedora Core 7 and now it's Debian Etch ...

The Provider checked the connection and it's ok ...

My FPS are @ ~ 950 and there rarely drops ... Smile

The Kernel is from "Backports.org"

Code:
root@rbi0372:~# dpkg -l | grep linux
ii  libselinux1              1.32-3                          SELinux shared libraries
ii  linux-image-2.6.21-2-686 2.6.21-5~bpo.1                  Linux 2.6.21 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/
ii  util-linux               2.12r-19                        Miscellaneous system utilities

So I don't know what else to do ... try many many startparms but it didn't seem to work ...

I hear on hlds mail list that some kernels can cause problems compared to others.

Theres reports that using a vanila 2.5.6 kernel works without problems.

If you have the time, trying diff kernels might be an idea.

Hmm

There might be just some minimal changes but I also tried the standard kernel and the mentioned one ...

OK ... tommorrow I'll try and build a custom kernel Smile

Stay tuned ...

Hi,

I compiled several kernels with several options ... but I didn't help ...

Hmm I don't want to downgrade my kernel to the latest Debian Sarge Kernel ... dunno if it wotks either ...

Hope valve will do something against it ...

Hmm you know, after all these years how could I be this stupid.
I forgot to check my CLIENT rates and one was magically locked by a dipshit server with low rate settings (my "rate" was set to 10000 instead of 30000)

That was the bloody problem, my server was running more than perfect all the friggin time, I could almost shoot myself there! After 4 days wasting time!
