A few Questions
#1
Ok i have Optimum Online. I want to make a small server for a few games or what ever i want. Right now i get 2Mbps upload. How big should i make, say a counter strike source, server? Like how many people? I have a wireless router, so should i connect wireless or with wires? Finally if i am running a server, will it slow down my internet connection at all? Thanks in advanced everyone!

Hey!

There's some few things we need to make clear first:

1. If you got a wireless routher please get one with a wire or forget having a server, it won't work.
2. Please tell us your server hardware
3. Are you playing and hosting a server on the same PC/machine?

Thanks, I have the option to plug my server directly into my router and it will work. As of right now, i do not have a server, but i am designing it and it should be AMD 3500+, 2 gigs, most likey at 10,000 rpm hard drive. It will be dedicated. So for that setup, how many slots do you think i should have? Also will it slow down my internet and finally if i wanted to make a price cut for my server, less ram or 7200 rpm hard drive?
Thanks in advanced!

The internet speed will slow down depending on how many players you host for.
That setup will hold around 30 players I guess.

if you go for 30 players your internet connection will be FULL, so it means it will probably be like 56k speed.
Also the server would run perfect with 1gig of ram and you don't need a 10k rpm drive either, it's nice to show off but you really won't notice any performance changes.

on cable the bandwidth is shared with all the other users on the same node (ie your neighbors) so if everyone is online at 5pm-9pm (the most heavily used times during the day) you WILL experience lag.

Ok, well at max i wanted 20 players, so i will have enough. Thank you for the help. Hopefully i wont experience too much lag. Also I read some where if i want to host 2 servers from one computer, it is better to have a 10,000 rpm. Is that true? Thanks in advance.

Of course higher RPM is always better, caus it's faster. But the question is do you need that speed for your server? Answer is no. You will NOT notice the difference between a 10k or 7.2k rpm server, if there is a difference at all..

Yay! Thanks. I am going for a cheaper server and 10k are more expensive of course.

I ran a 32 person day of defeat (1.6) server using Optimum online with the same upload rate as you (2Mbps) and players noticed some lag but it wasn't too bad, lag was around 80-95 for most players when 24+ people were connected. I was using a non-wireless router, (SMC 7008ABR) and was running hlds (not srcds) on a Red Hat 9 linux server with 1.2 Ghz processer (AMD) and 1 gigabyte of old ram.

You should be in good shape to run a 30 person server with a little lag with the rig you have stated above. If it doesn't work out you can always adjust player slots or ticrate.
