VPS...probably a bad idea but I'll ask anyway

What kind of server could I host on a VPS? (Virtual Private Server)

I'm specifically curious about what a VPS with these guys could handle: http://jtlnet.com/vps.php

I've emailed them asking about what hardware the VPSs are hosted on. But for now we'll assume they've at least got them on dual opterons or dual xeons, so that might leave a single VPS approximately the processing power of an AMD Sempron 3000+ (with some tolerance)

I'm not wanting to do anything serious, just maybe a small server (or two)...that I might host alongside a few websites.

Based on the fact that the server will be running Linux, and have 256MB ram alone, what could it host (also keeping in mind 200GB monthly bandwidth)?

I'm afraid the 256mb ram isn't enough, when I run a 10 player server the memory usage climbs up to 300+ in a few hours, You'd need to restart it VERY often.

Second, VPS share CPU as you know, all VPS CSS servers I've seen don't get above a tickrate of 10, yes 10, not a typo.
If you're lucky you might be able to squeeze out 20/25 but that will only happen if there are 4 people on that VPS hosting package.

Well, I could always try it. I don't own a VPS yet. I'll just host it from my house (I have 600kbps upload). I wish I could just get cheap SDSL (symmetric DSL, same download and upload)

SDSL is in my eyes way too expensive, you offer all your download to get that tiny bit of upload gain.

You would be better off just renting a game server from one of the bazillion providers.
