Scanning over your tutorial, I'm looking forward to giving this a try. I did notice one thing that I wanted to point out --
Under OpenSolaris snv_111 (the current stable release), the Realtek network driver is broken and will drop you off the network for 20 minutes at a time when there's any kind of load put on it. That's the rge0 you have in your tutorial. I'm sure many people have embedded Realtek network cards these days. I think the problem is also there in snv_130, the newest development release.

Also, SXCE is being discontinued at the end of this month.
I think Zones work better than VirtualBox for this kind of application because you'll have less overhead of running and maintaining an entire OS. Just a lot more simple and more efficient use of possibly limited resources.
One last thing - OpenSolaris now uses Gnome or KDE and has deprecated the use of Java Desktop. So that should make it more familiar to users of Ubuntu, etc
