[Linux/Unix]: How to set up and run srcds under Solaris 10
#16
Scanning over your tutorial, I'm looking forward to giving this a try. I did notice one thing that I wanted to point out --

Under OpenSolaris snv_111 (the current stable release), the Realtek network driver is broken and will drop you off the network for 20 minutes at a time when there's any kind of load put on it. That's the rge0 you have in your tutorial. I'm sure many people have embedded Realtek network cards these days. I think the problem is also there in snv_130, the newest development release.

^ has the updated driver and install instructions.

Also, SXCE is being discontinued at the end of this month.

I think Zones work better than VirtualBox for this kind of application because you'll have less overhead of running and maintaining an entire OS. Just a lot more simple and more efficient use of possibly limited resources.

One last thing - OpenSolaris now uses Gnome or KDE and has deprecated the use of Java Desktop. So that should make it more familiar to users of Ubuntu, etc

I happen to be working on updating the tutorial right now. That's how I saw your reply so fast :-)

The Realtek mess is the one thing missing from my backup copy of the tutorial that really hurts. I put a link in to better drivers and a description of the problem in a later update and now I have to re-do all of that.

Ditto the Java Desktop. I had the tutorial all up to date with Solaris 2008.5, when they added Gnome, and I ditched the SXCE stuff back then, too. I miss the Java Desktop. I think I'm the only one :-) The program manager Sun hired away from Red Hat starting with Project Indiana has really moved Solaris in a direction that will allow a lot more applications to run or be ported now that they're using Gnome & KDE. The stuff I like always seems to lose in the free market. Anyone remember Motif vs OpenLook? Guess which one I wrote all my software for back in 1990. At least they're both dead now so I don't feel so bad. Plus when OpenLook looked doomed we moved to GNUStep which lives on today.

I also had a better description of why I chose Zones instead of other possible solutions but that got wiped out, too.

I should have everything up to date again this weekend.

Thanks,

Ok, just wanted to share my thoughts, since I'm both familiar with Solaris and interested in doing this. Looks like you've got it covered though Smile

Zones are better with Virtual Box, I must agree. There is a fix for the network driver which could be found in the txt file. Thanks for this update I appreciate it really well.
