Hi
Just got an older AMD 1800+, 256mb ram. I got 512kbps upload speed. I would just like to ask; how many players could it take? I head some people running 10 slots on a pentium III... so i guess it should be possible to have 10 slots?
Thanks, Bonsai

Well im guessin the mods will say no more than 10 players, but i have managed to get 14 players (including myself) to work with no lag or ping rises, and im using rate 6000, and settings for 33tick, i have disabled downloading and uploading of files on the server too.
My connection is Virgin Media 10mbit/512kbps soon to be 20mbit/768kbps in may.

I can host a 20 player server filled with bots on my P3 933MHz without lag.
although, it's a fact, EdwardTobia, that you can not host 14 players on a 512kbps connection. That means you have to set maxrate to 4500 or something near that amount, which will result in high choke building up from the 6 player mark, before you get to 12 players the choke will get the tickrate below 20, thus resulting in lag.
Even if you manage to hold teh tickrate above 20 the quality will be that low.

do some more testing, you will find out that every player does not actually max out the specified rate setting. I use rate 6000 and my server is fine wether you believe me or not, maybe you can test it, i can give you the IP later on as my house is having the electrics upgraded so server is down an power is off within the house.
But yeh rate 6000 is perfect, i tried 6500 but pings started to rise at 14 players, but 6000 is perfect.

that's too bad bonsaihero... hope u can find a good one, they don't cost anything these days
EdwardTobia, when there are 8 players in the game every slot will use 5kb/s and even more when the player amount increases (this is at 33 tickrate). Since the connection can only handle around 52 real kb/s (overhead calculated) you'll see that with 10 players the server is at it's max. When there's only 4 people together on one piece the kb/s per slot will multiply by 1,5 or even more in most times, this also occurs when a bomb is planted.
even if you manage to have bandwidth usage as low as 5kb/s per player you'd need a 70kb/s connection (that's 768kbps with overhead usage).
And even then there only has to be 1 fight in one area or a bomb plant and you'll get lag issues immediatly.
Anyway, I don't know where you live but I'd love to see your server at 14 players (all internet).

I have never noticed a slot hit 5kb/s on my server, most of the time its between 3 and 4. Also my upload seems to go higher than 52kb/s, when i tested by sending a file to my m8 i had speeds hitting 60-65kb/s...
Im guessing the quality of my line is good.
I know it sounds a bit mad, it does to me too, but honestly my server does not experience "connection" lag when 14 players are in the game (not bots). I will start my server when i get home and post the IP for you to see yourself.
