Routing question
#1
Hey, what would switching from my Linksys BEFSR41 router to a plain Netgear switch have on me running my servers off of that connection but also playing (on a aseparate computer of course) on that connection becauase ive noticed much lag on the servers while its been hooked up to the Linksys (it spikes now and then at random intervals). The network im running them on has a ~6000KB/s (yes, KB not Kb) dodwnstream / ~6000KB/s upstream (tested, so those number are correct so i kno its not the speed thats the prollem). Regardless ofthe effects on the IP and stuff, would i be able to swap from the Lynksys router to the Netgear Switch and still be able to play and whatnot and possibly reduce the lag spikes?

I'm also gettting a high Choke, now is that based on internet or Server hardware?

If you want to use a switch you need a server in front of it, you can't connect a switch directly to the internet.
here's a switch setup:
Internet=>modem=>server=>switch=>LAN

So you can't just replace the router with the switch.

Choke is mostly due to software configuration (rates on the server being too low for the tickrate/player ratio and stuff)

i think i might just test that theory of swapping the router iwht the switch. hte internet jack in my room is from the University and i had used a switch in the past, but not for this purpose, which is why i asked. so im thinkin ill just adjust the rates, and futz around with the routing some more. i just wanna get rid ofthis lagg that happens and hopefully the spikes cuz thats really annoying cuz people get booted when it spikes. U think the spikes are because of the rates? or is that hardware

If it's a network connection with the university there won't be a problem using the switch, more trouble using a router in that way!
Spikes can come from anywhere, I can say it's hardware but if you have a P4 2.6 GHZ or something I'm sure it isn't the hardware. Could be anything really

hmph...larighty then time to switch to a switch O.o

i was only concerned b/c the router is a few years old and it night be only letting not a lot of bandwidth through causing the lagg and spikes
