Recompiled kernel now really slow FPS
#1
Hello, I have been running my server ok for the past several months on Slackware 10.2. I have been running on Kernel 2.6.17.4 and have had a good 480 FPS. I recently noticed that I was only seeing one CPU under /proc/cpuinfo. I have a Amd X2 3800 CPU so I found this a little strange. I went into the kernel config and enabled Symmetric multi-processing support and then I was able to see both cores of the CPU under /proc/cpuinfo. When I went to start up my server it was REALLY slow loading. By the time it finished loading (about 5-8min) it was only running at 10fps. The only thing I changed in the kernel was that Symmetric multi-processing support. Anyone have any ideas?

Is there any way you can swap out the CPU with another one? I have seen this happen before, we just swap it out and things where ok. Could of been a bad CPU! =\

If you're only going to run 1 server, you're better off WITHOUT SMP.

maybe inside the kernel, SMP support isnt added.

No, I don't have any way to swap out the cpu. I am running the same cpu in my gaming computer, but I do not want to take it out of there. This server also acts as my local file server which probably doesn't take up much resources to run that. If SMP support was not added I wouldn't see two CPU's under /proc/cpuinfo would I? I guess I could always recompile the kernel without the SMP support and see if that fixes it...but I would like to run my server to it's fullest capabilities (since I paid for it).

As I said, if you're not going to be runnign like 3 or 4 servers SMP is qorthless, hence why if you have a P4 with HT, its recommended HT is disabled when running a server, it won't use both cores.

Ok, is there a way to just have the server startup and run off of one cpu core instead of both?

remove SMP from your kernel.

Ya, I did that for now. just wondering if it was possible to specify which cpu you wanted to use from the prompt for an app.

as others are saying if ur only running 1 server turn off smp

if ur running 2, u could turn it on - it will be used but u wont notice much difference its when u start running 4+ that u want smp on.
