There is always a chance that someone breaks through your security, even without any ports opened.
Thing is this chance we're talking about here is THAT small we can ignore it. Nothing really nothing is safe. But the chances of being hacked or whatever are so small. If you have a good firewall and antivirus everything will be ok.

Most servers are wide open. Firewalls hurt server ping and general performance from my experience, hardware firewalls usually have to be turned off. Sometimes people just use dmz and thats just asking for it.

If the software and/or hardware is configured correctly there will be no ping increase or other lag issues (btw did you see how old this thread is?)
