server specs question (ram and # of slots)

Specs: windows xp sp2/ P4 2.8 HT/ (2x256) ddr400 dual-channel
net speed - 200KBytes up/500KB down

i've read that my up speed should theoretically support 20 slots w/sv_maxrate 10000 (serverwiki.org)

given 200KB up, what is optimal/realistic slots and do i need more ram??
can anyone provide me with a memory/slot ratio?? haven't found that in searches

i got 10 days left to refund the 2 sticks of 256 and get 2x512's, since my mobo only got 2 ram slots...

I would certainly replace the 2x256 with 2x512. You have a pretty nice machine there, only thing it's missing is the RAM

Oh and I think you can set the sv_maxrate to 11000.

There's not really a ratio for slots/memory(atleast I don't know of any) you just have to try a bit. But getting 1GB memory will certainly take the doubt away.

thanks for the quick repy...since this comp is dedicated to serving 1 dod:s game and the bandwidth isn't going up anytime soon, i've got to do some installation and testing soon

shipping the ram back and buying new ones is something i prefer to avoid (restocking fee and shipping costs) if 512mb is capable of a 20 slot server (or even lower it to 16)

i have 512mb sticks in my main comp that i can swap in to see the difference, just need players to play i guess

would adding bots simulate approx the same memory usage as if real players joined from outside and give me an idea of how much slots is possible (other things like bandwidth not considered)??

BOT's usually use more resources than normal players, if your server can run 20 bots in a fierce fight it will run the same amount of players for sure. 20 player will run on 512MB if the server is the only thing you're running on it.

Normally after about 24 hrs online (and being played on) ram usage will go up (if you use mods: ram leakage from mods).

If you just run a standard server about 150 mb will be the max the server will use.

I've seen servers use 1 gb each, for not rebooting that often and using tons of mods...
