Struggling with getting External IP working.[newbie]
#1
Hi, I've downloaded and installed the Dedicated Server to use with Counter-Strike: Source and i'm having terrible trouble getting this thing working!

I've loaded the software into GUI mode (just to make it easier for the time being). In the "Main" tab, it shows the IP address as my Local IP. When I add my Local IP into my "Favourites" in Steam, it comes up correctly with the level and the name etc. However, I can't for the life of me get it to be my External IP so that my mates can access it.

I've tried using the 'ip' option setting the ip in the console, and also launching the software with "+ip <myip>" as a parameter but I just receive this error;
"Couldn't allocate dedicated server UDP port".

Yes I looked this error up, and have already got my ports forwarded in my router;

(if i've done this wrong please slap me and explain how!)

However, (in the GUI) it still states that the IP Address is my Local IP, even though when I enter "ip" into the console, it correctly states my external IP (as I 'set' it).

What do I need to do to get this thing working!?! Sad

Cheers. Smile

Have you had your friends try to connect to your server by adding (your external ip) in the favorites menu? Verify that you have given them the correct external ip (sometimes they change)....go to http://www.ipchicken.com to get your current external ip. Start the console command without the +ip command. Also, are you running multiple computer through the router? Verify that you have forwarded the ports to the correct internal ip of the server computer. These can change too if the router is reset.

I have done both those things. I have a static External and Internal IP, the ports are forwared to the correct computer and my friend did try adding my external IP to his favs. Sad

for the +ip command, you have to add your INTERNAL ip to the cmd line, not your external ip (don't know which on you used so i thought i'd tell ya =P)

for the port forwarding, I read on the steamforums once that there were troubles with the port ranges. You might want to try to add every port for itsself so instead of 27016-27020 you add 16,17,18,19 and 20.

I did try having IP as my local IP.

The contents of "/cstrike/cfg/server.cfg";
Code:
IP 10.0.0.106
Port 27015

I'll try that stuff with the ports, do you think I'll need to to the same thing with Windows Firewall?

Thanks

EDIT:
Ok, I've done the ports thing in the router settings. And tried again. But it still seems the same:

I also noticed that when I run the console version with these parameters: "-console +ip 10.0.0.106 -game cstrike"
It doesn't have an error, but in my Steams favourites list it still returns the server as "<not responding>".

Sorry to bump, but does anyone have any ideas of what I need to do?

Also on a side-note, I'm thinking of installing Linux on my Mac and running the server on that. Is the Linux DS much different to the Windows version? Is there extra things that I might need to do?

Cheers

I dont think there is much more you can do lol.
Routers are just a big pain in the ass and i hate them, i never ever recommend routers to anyone, especially not when you serve fast and direct connect services.

Linux isnt THAT different, most things are the same except for some commands and startuplines, but i'm sure you can find all that in the Linux section.

Ok thanks :/ I guess I'll just have to keep trying different things?

EDIT: I just noticed that I cannot access the server from another computer on the LAN. It just doesnt pick it up. Sad (using the local ip)

one thing will be different, looks like you're running the gui srcds since you have a screenshot. there's no such thing in linux. also you can type "status" at the console and it will tell you what it (the server) think's it's ip is. try connecting to that ip from the lan.

I think he has the same problem as me. What he needs to do (according to the last response) is connect to your modem and forward from there.

http://forums.srcds.com/showthread.php?tid=2369 Look there and try all those.

I just need to find out how to connect to my modem.

I've already forwarded the ports, as stated in my previous posts. However I believe I must have done something wrong seeing as it's simply not working. :/

Did that and it just says the same IP as I tried (the one in the GUI screenshot)

I'm going to try setting my IP in a DMZ to see if my friend can connect then, if they can then I've forwarded the ports incorrectly, if they can't... it's a problem with the server set up, or my PC firewall.

EDIT:
I'm having serious problems here and its getting really annoying .
Anyway I decided to "re-do" the port forwarding so its now like this:

Please tell me if I need to do any more.

or a router problem, i couldnt get my server online because my router was simply blocking everything... I routed all the ports, I did everything but there was NO chance at all getting ANY program on the net.

At that point i was so pissed, i threw my router against the wall and bought a switch, now everything works 10x (1Gbps switch) as fast and i can access anything i want.

Well i just edited my post with the "new" (and only) ports that I have forwarded. My 'router' is a modem with a built in router.
It's just annoying me that my brother can't even access the server across the LAN!

so can your brother ping the ip address of the server? i've never ran the gui in window (and linux doesn't have one) but when he tries to connect the console should show something.

Yeah, I had some problems with my network, and he's now able to access to server and join (although having some problems with mani-admin which can be resolved at a later date).
However, I'm yet to test with an external party to see whether or not the server is available. I just need to wait for my friend to sign on but he's been away for a while now.
