What gives better SRCDS performance
#1
I know there are many other factors to consider (e.g. bandwith, network, RAM etc...) but if you had a choice of high speed Dual core processor or a slightly lower speed Quad Core dedicated machine which you can rent from a game server company, which would give your individual games best performance.

I am looking to run games such as CSS, and also the new CSGO when that comes out on a Windows 2003 or 2008 Server machine. At the moment I am evaluating prices.

To give an example, Intel Dual Core 2.66 Ghz or Intel Quad Core 2.4Ghz?

Is it worth setting each server to be run on one core, or allow srcds to run across all cores?

srcds is a single core application

Ok so would that entail to get the fastest processor affordable?

I run 30 slot servers on a single core without any problems on a Quad core (E5520) 2.27ghz.

Newer cpu's generally have better architecture.

Bandwidth is one of the most important thing, you may have big processors, lots of I/O but not bandwidth, you won't go far...

Before talking about processors, I would strongly look at the bandwidth side, what can you supply as upload and download? And Backbone Internet provider. As an example, think that if you have 10 players at the same time, each player will suck up at least an average of 10 to 12 Kb/s output and 5 to 7 Kb/s inpout on the server side. This is only for the current Counter-Strike Source; we are not even talking about CSGO! We haven't seen the spec for that game yet.

Just something to take in consideration

Well I would be renting a dedicated server from a company. I assume like most dedis, it will be a 100mb port connection from the data centre. If this is what you are trying to ask.

If we use an example of a Quad core 2.66 ghz, 4gb ddr3 ram, 100mb connection. How many servers do you think that could hold?

It totally depends on server size & mods.

1-2 servers per core is achievable.
