Help me set Garry's Mod Rates
#1
Hey guys,

Can you please help me set the rates (minrate, maxrate, tickrate, etc) for my gmod server ?

Specs:
16 Slots
Dual Core 2.66 Ghz
2GB RAM
940 kbps upload speed (as detected by speedtest.net)
Addons: Wiremod/PHX/vMod

I've tried using rate calculators, etc but as soon as i have more than 4 players and they start building, we get lag (200+ pings)

Thank you!

You have very little bandwidth, and too few for 16 slots. You can maybe run 3-4 (or so) on that connection without lag. There is nothing you can do with the rates to get much better than that.

I've seen people run 12slot laggless servers on 384kbps upload...
Besides, by the srcds calculations, my bandiwth is enough to run a 16slot server.
I just need the right rates for this.

Why?

Do you have a problem right now ?

Is it 940 KB/s or kb/s? 940 kb/s is only 0.9 Mb/s, which is less than recommended to run a game server.

And like you said, when 4 or so people connect everyone's pings go up. This is normal when you have reached your bandwidth max.

Basically for internet connections (bits/second):

* 128k uplink = 4 players (2 players for srcds)
* 256k uplink = 7 players (4 players for srcds)
* 320k uplink = 9 players (6 players for srcds)
* 512k uplink = 14 players (9 players for srcds)
* 768k uplink = 21 players (14 players for srcds)
* 1024k uplink = 28 player (19 players for srcds - note 16 players is max for HL2DM)
* 1140k uplink = 32 players (max for HLDS) (21 players for CS:S)
* 1708k uplink = 32 players for CS:S (max)

Your particular optimal setting may vary depending on your connection. Local players on LAN are not included in this count.

A good rule for HLDS is 35.6Kbits per player .

A good rule for SRCDS (Source Games) is 53.4KBits per player (about 1.5x more than HLDM).
