Building a new server for colocation
#1
Hey all, I host my own servers on Garry's Mod, and currently have my server running on a Xeon X3230 2.66GHz quad core, 4GB ddr2 533mhz,a nd 1gbit line at a datacenter.

Would this new build be a much better improvement?

This one is my original build I was going to use for my new box, see just below for the current build I'm looking at.

Any suggestions to the build?

I have never used two desktop processors on a server motherboard.
SSD's are not good for servers in general ( So I herd. )

Look nice enough, Do you really want to put in $1300 on a dedicated server for a few game servers? I suppose if you're made of money, might as well go all in.

I make enough in donations to justify it. I just want the best processor I can get for srcds.

Heh, Get something with at least 3GHz of processing power then.

That server is one tank of a server. Why build that monster when your only hosting a couple game servers? That thing could handle sooo much more, its a waste of money to build that with only a couple servers. A single corei7 will do fine. Don't do SSD, just get 2 sata's in raid. It will work fine/fast. And if your going to get dual i7's, get 8gb of ram instead of just 4. Why skimp on the ram?

IF i remember correctly Desktop based i7's do not have Dual Link QPI's, therefore they CANNOT be ran in a dual-cpu based platform..

Also, think about your needs, do you want to host more servers, vs, host less but better performing ones? ( doesn't really affect much in garry's mod i suppose ), you would need much more ram. Try to keep everything under a ratio i suppose, your not going to be able to host much if you have Dual Quad cores with only 4GB of ram, or your still not going to be able to host much with 24GB of ram and a single quad. Toungue

Hope this helps!

I would agree that it would make sense to upgrade to 8GB of ram.
While SRCDS isn't very heavy on ram, will all that processing power, you'll need the ram to back it up.

Also, as cookies said, that mobo wont take i7s. If you read the description it says that "The TYAN S7002G2NR-LE server motherboard supports up to two Dual-Core/Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 series processors." And the 5500 series gets VERY expensive when you pass about 2.26 GHz per core.

Please do not PM me for server related help

Ah, alright thank you for the answers. The reason I am getting so much processing power, is: I currently run 3 live servers and it uses up about 70% of my Xeon3230 during peak hours, but srcds still seems to lag horribly. I guess that would be the clock speed causing that lag though.

New build, what do you think?

I would up the power supply to about 500w, instead of 300, this gives some room to play with. And personally, I would use something like a 160gb sata, where 80gb is fine for game servers, but if you ever have any use for the box later on, its just cheaper to get one big hard drive than several little ones. Just my .02 cents though. But that is a nicer setup.
