Running a Server and Playing on The Same Computer

Actually, I can use it for commercial use as well.

And yes, while I do understand not everyone would have the opportunity I have, I am still hosting from home.. which is why I disagree with beaver.

Ok, for my posts recently, I've chosen to debate against the implication that it is bad to run SRCDS and play on the same computer, so I am making this post to correctly define just what you should do in the scenario if you only have 1 computer.

Background Info:
If you host SRCDS and play your game of choice on the same computer, you may run into some problems. This is not being argued; they are all easily fixable and entirely workaround-able. There is no bug/problem that cannot be worked around.
Being "un-recommended" does not mean something is recommended against.

Solution 1:
Read informative threads about how to set up srcds, attempt to do so, and post a thread if you have a problem, making sure to include all required information in the information topic.

Possibility 1:
Instead, run a listen server. You can do this in game by clicking the little "Create Server" button.
One downside is this will not run as well as an external SRCDS process.
Another downside is that you must leave the game running and in-game for it to stay up.
That being said, it's easier to maintain, since any visual content you auto-download from other servers(materials/models/sounds) can be applied to your server (ex. Quake Sounds, Models, etc.).

Solution 2:
It's acceptable and recommended to buy a game server from a game server provider! They are generally helpful, and may help you install mods and help fix problems you might have.
The upside is that you can run pretty much whatever you can afford with little lag and stable server fps.
The downside is that you can only run what you can afford. It can be expensive to get a 32 slot server!
Another downside is that it can take time and bandwidth to upload files you want on your server to the server.

My Opinion:
When I am playing a multiplayer game, I would rather be able to save a server to favorites that has minimal ping and great uptime.
A home hosted server may be laggy depending on your connection, and not up all the time depending on your computer habits.
I personally would suggest getting hosting from a GSP (game server provider) unless you have at least 1mbps download speed and 1mbps upload speed for every 6 slots you intend to host on a 66 tick server.

To wrap it all up, this is all based off fact I have read in many places all over the internet, including what I've learned off these forums; as well as my own personal experiences and knowledge.
Please don't be a dick in responses, but I think anyone with common sense in SRCDS will agree that it is idiotic to suggest that it is 'HORRIBLE' to host a server and play on the same computer.

Still, you keep misinterpreting what he is saying. Leave this thread until you grow up. And yes, I have the right to ban you from this thread.

For the 50th time, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It is not recommended compared to getting a dedicated machine or renting a server. We do not give a crap about what you have for internet or a computer, the point is it is not recommended to run it from a home internet (which you specified you had rented a business connection from Verizon FiOS), or from the same computer you play on. I can't force you to do it or not, but I'm telling you when the professionals and experts with this tool say- DO NOT HOST FROM YOUR HOME COMPUTER.

So like I said, I ban you from this thread. I'm tired of your misinterpretation of this thread, and your lack to seek proper wisdom.

This is what he said:

I asked you if I was misinterpreting what he said to explain it to me better.

You did not explain what he said to me any better, infact you talked about something else entirely.

Since you disagree with me and I disagree with you, I think we should just ignore each other from here on out. I simply ask that you stop spreading false information to other people.

You can host from home, there is no issues with it. Sometimes its better to go with a GSP/Dedicated server, other times you won't notice a difference.

Why are you so against hosting from home anyway?.

As stated before, you have a different experience than most people. I'm not against hosting at home, this thread is about hosting on the same computer you play on, and explaining other limitations that have to do with your house.

But I've hosted on the same computer I played on before as well for over three months with no issues. Rolleyes

Solution 1:

Make sure to enter console command sv_lan 0
cause its 1 by default and it's info will be aquired using external ip , port but no one can join and will show the error server is lan side only .

I registered just to put this comment in... This entire thread is an unnecessary flame war. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves because this entire thread is pointless to people like me who are just browsing the internet for helpful information. </waves hand>. You may resume your pointless bickering and flame on my post as well. Also, Beaver, you need to chill out. Though you are quite funny. "I hope you get banned from this forum trololol!". Okay maybe that trololol wasn't in there but other than that it was an exact quote. Okay, we get it. YOU and your HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL friends do not RECOMMEND it. It is very possible and works just fine for most people with half a brain who try. But, seriously, don't go at people's throats when they go against your OPINIONS. Yes, you have facts that prove your point. So do they.

This comment is not a scrutiny of your opinions, but of your behavior. I hope you take this to heart.

Also, thank you to people like LGThanatos who actually try to put in useful information in and help.

I agree with Loopyman.

The idea of this thread is to inform the difficulties of hosting a server on the same computer you play on. It does not say anywhere it is impossible, it is just highly not-recommended. I would not call this an opinionated post, it is a informational post. If you disagree with the idea of this, take it up with Valve, because they don't like the idea either.

The only people flaming on this forum are the ones that are going on and on saying that this information is incorrect (which its not). Like I've said before, if you do it and see no problems, that doesn't mean that there is no problems. Ask any experienced support member on this forum and they will tell you how many issues there is with this practice. I could link to you a dozen or more threads about how this made peoples servers inoperable for various reasons.

Please stop flaming and posting on this thread unless you have something actually productive.

As Beaver has just said this is a discussion, it does not mean all the infomation is correct or if it even applies to you. This is just peoples opinions about the subject matter as it changes person to person their can not be a correct answer just widely accepted opinions.

I do not wish to close this thread because it is a very good topic so please stop flaming and only post useful and to the point posts.

This is not just a warning to Joccend but to everyone to keep this on topic as this is the best way to provide helpful infomation.
