Running a Server and Playing on The Same Computer

I can understand why hosting/playing on the same machine would be a bad idea but I only want one other person to be able to connect to it. And with a dual core cpu, 6 gb of ram and anywhere between 25mbps and 30mbps on the i'net, i dont think that should be a problem.

My issue is that I cannot connect to my own server from the LAN side. It just times out. I dropped the firewall and there is no router....

If your friends can connect from your external IP, it's all good. Just remember you need to connect from your local IP, or the "LAN" tab in the Steam Servers browser. Smile

I know this is going to sound stupid, but i havent even asked my friend to try to connect to it yet. I figured If I cant even get to it, there must be a problem. I am able to see my svr in the LAN list but when I attempt to join, it just times out after 4 tries.

Also, you mentioned a listen server which, i assume, is just creating the server from within the game. If i do that, what would keep my friend from joing that game?

Just make sure ports 27000-27040 UDP/TCP are opened to the server machine, and that your firewall is off/allows SRCDS, and it should work Smile

By the way... Is that you're actual data rate?!?!?!

Yeah, the server is currently down for repairs, but that is my actual Download/Upload speed Smile

I keep trying to join my own srcds server in TF2 but it keeps giving me port errors!
How can I connect to my own dedicated server, knowing the risks?

Set the launch options for TF2 to be -clientport 27040. That way there is no port conflictions.

Nope, still gives me a "Couldn't allocate any server IP port" and crashes. Sad

EDIT: Well after a bit of an investigation, I can in-fact play from the same comp now. I put "+hostport 27016 +tv_port 27021" in the launch options for TF2 and ta-da! IT WORKS!

Yea there are lots of people trying to do this, but hell a server should not be run on the same pc u play on, no less a home internet conection

This guy is a complete moron. Don't listen to him.

You can run a server off a home internet connection just fine. Including one hundred tick.

Darksoul, not everyone has such speeds. It pretty rarely.

However one of the minus about hosting at home is that the ping will be higher.

Not trying to start a fight or argue, but how so?. I had someone on my server yesterday that had a ping of 5. He was not masking his ping. It was his real ping.

Others had between 15-20. Infact, only one or two had any over 60.

Though this was on a small server, and not a super populated one.

Point is, as long as they are near you (within say 500-1000 miles) the ping will be acceptable. The same holds true for a datacenter. Despite having better network setups, it still has to deal with distance in the end.

Either am I.

Your pings as a private person will always be higher than in a good datacenter. Yeah, I have 5ms on my server too(not connected on lan). But when it's full it has twice the ping compared to my server in a datacenter.

I have 9 "jumps" to my IX. (Internet eXange Point).
My datacenter has 1. I run with like 7ms when it's pretty filled.

But as long as you've enough bandwidth private, there will be no idea to even rent or host somewhere else.

The reason why Beaver claims it is bad or one of them is that most people when they host at home, they quite offent have problems with even Steam, ports, firewalls and so on. Due to they usually host and play on the same network/pc.

Only issue with that is the problems it can cause.. eh.

Yeah, I'm just saying its not a bad idea if you know how to do it from home Toungue.
