Running a Server and Playing on The Same Computer
I have no problem doing both. Big Grin

I usually don't have problems playing on the server and my computer. But very well said!

I just started playing Team Fortress 2 again and I decided to make a dedicated server, only took me a good few hours. Along with some minor problems with the hostname, everything works fine running the server on the same PC I play on. Thanks to the forums of course it was especially easy to set it up, so thanks everyone.

and yes I have actually NOT tried the server with full slots (24/24) so I'm still wondering on that, but I mainly wanted it for LAN parties and easy gaming with friends online.

Nice thread Beaver, kind of helped me troubleshoot a quick problem or two.

Specs-
i5 2500k, 8gb RAM on window 7 x64.

Can anyone link me to a guide, in where I can read about making a server using the 'create server' inside CS:S? Will addons and etc work?
I have tried creating the server, and typing sv_lan 0, I could see my real steamID but none could connect - just the same when using the SRCDS tool
Help me please:

I run an FTP server, http server and two extremely popular source servers (one 64 slot one 32 slot) and i run them all on the PC i play on, both 100 tick, and i never get complaints of lag unless my cpu usage is maxed out, and that can be fixed by giving the servers higher cpu priority

Cool, Good for you.

Quote:ports, hardware, firewalls, and many other problems
Ports? Just tell us which ports we have to forward.
Hardware? Well, any PC worth ~300€ can handle the game and SRCDS at once.
Firewalls? Add an exception to Steam.exe, srcds.exe and hl.exe. Or completely turn off firewall.
Many other problems you say? All of the problems can be found and resolved but people just don't understand when someone says "I don't have money to buy server" or "I don't have such free space on my HDD to use SRCDS provided by hldsupdatetool".

I have a pc desktop with intel i5 , 4 cores @ 2.8 Ghz and 4 GB of RAM , running windows 8 Pro 64 bit atm. The pc is 3 years old.

I recently upgraded my connection to a VDSL one , which I get 8.8 mbps (1.1 MB/s) total upload speed.

So , it sounds cool , for the first time of my life , I enjoyed hosting from the same computer I played , most because of the VDSL (the majority of people in my country are still owning ADSL ,with the crappy 0.8 mbps upload cap, and even in VDSL , you must live close to the DSLAM , like me, in order to enjoy the plenty upload plus get what you pay)

BUT....

I just noticed the majority of people playing on my tf2 server , hosted in my pc. They are mostly not from my country, and they are having pings around 120-140 ms.
These people are originated from countries like Turkey, Poland, Sweden, Russia , etc
I think it is unfair for them to play with such pings, even though nobody ever complaint about that, my server is an every day success , joining the same people again.

I know that they join because they like my server and its game mode (surf) because if they even cared about ping, the server would be most times empty or poor populated. On the other hand, I think it's about time to improve their experience, by moving my entire tf2 server to a german datacenter (paid server) just because I respect them and also , I think it is more fair for all the players, since Germany is the center of Europe.

To sum up , I decided to move the server from my home , to a datacenter , for latency reason (more fair play for everyone) , even though I have the power and bandwidth to host it.

Your opinion about this?

P.S: My country is Greece Smile

It seems that players either they don't know how to connect to the new server , or they don't want to, even though I have set a password to the old one , and hostname depicting the new server's ip.

It seems that I have to revert back hosting to my pc again , since they have used to it.
