Tick rate and FPS
#1
Just wanted to setup a match server for CS 1.6 and I've only setup Source servers.

So does 1.6 use tickrates and serverside FPS? If so I need the equivalent for 100 tick, 500FPS....well the best for playing matches on Win 2k3.

Thanks Smile

GoldSRC is slightly different. This is how my server.cfg looks:

Code:
sv_minrate 6000
sv_maxrate 25000
sv_maxupdaterate 100
sys_ticrate 10000

... and my strartup-line:
Code:
+maxplayers 11 -game cstrike -secure -console +port 15000 +map aim_crazyjump4

in the startup just do +sys_ticrate 2000 and +fps_max 0 or 1000, stable 1000fps on my boxes Toungue
also in server.cfg remember to do sv_maxrate 30000 and sv_minrate 20000

IMHO that is a way too high max and minrate. Those look like what SRCDS uses, to be honest.

Are the both values too high? Are you sure you know what you're talking about?

At least in CS:S (and in general), it's wise to have sv_maxrate set to maximum (eg. 9999999). That's because obviously nobody wants that the server limits the rate to something less than the optimal.

Then sv_minrate should be set to high value also, because then the server forces everybody to have optimal rate value.

Anyway, I haven't administrated cs1.6 servers, so I don't know if there are some pitfalls setting the values high. If everything works as supposed, then the values should be high.

From my experience, letting users use more rate then they need to (i.e. people who use rates that are too high assuming it will give them better performance) is not a good idea. GoldSrc goes rather easy on bandwidth, but you should still use caution.

It is not wise to have sv_maxrate set to a maximum. If you search google for information on how to set your rates correctly you will NEVER stumble upon anyone saying the opposite.

It's not about what is written on random forums, it's about the truth.

For example if the game wants to send 10 commands at once because you were just crouching, jumping and running in 78 degree angle to the left from your current position. You would be sending lots of data because you want all the commands go through. It'd suck if all commands would not be sent just because your rate settings are too low. Thus, the values should be high.

You have twice said that it's not wise to set the values to maximum, but you haven't said the reason. I've now twice said the reason why it's good to set them high. Let everybody make their decision who's right.

It's quite stupid even that there are those rate settings. Everybody should alsways use the maximum because the game doesn't send the data just for fun. There's always use for all the data - otherwise the data wouldn't be sent at all.

He wants a private scrim server, those are the rates all my clients and myself use so...

There is no such thing as "truth" when dealing with the internet.

The most obvious reason for limiting the bandwidth is that you might be low on bandwidth and you might perhaps want to split it more evenly amongst the players.

What are you talking about?

a) There is truth
b) Servers have enough bandwidth
c) Rates should be set to maximum

In addition to setting rates to maximum I'd recommend running my rate tracking system [ http://forums.srcds.com/viewtopic/7255 ] on public servers to make sure everybody have good rates. Unfortunately the system doesn't work on Windows.

Doggie, learn to accept the truth. You don't have to disagree with me just because I didn't agree with you in the first place. Don't pull some new ungrounded "maybe he's on low bandwidth" claim again. Also this thread is old and dead, so it seems you're just a forum post whore getting your post count high.

Mods, lock this topic (and maybe take a look at what else Doggie has posted). If anybody needs help for this topic they can ask again.

Not all servers have enough bandwidth. Some are limited speed-wise and some are limited total size-wise.

By the way, what OS are you using, dualcore? For you, hazz, win2k3 is fairly good at hosting 1.6 servers on as-is. Make sure you're running a timer-booster and you'll easily reach 512FPS. For 1000FPS you need the advanced ACPI driver, I'd recommend you search for it on the forums - there's bound to be a guide somewhere Smile .

the ACPI driver works like shit running thru a 1kb pipe, use 2008 you'll get stable 1kfps out of the box Big Grin

You can try the following

sv_maxrate 25000
sv_minrate 2000
sv_maxupdaterate 101
sys_ticrate 1000
fps_max 101

Also make sure you have the MMTimer or some form of Media timer running on the machine.
