Slow Downloads

Hey guys.

I asked a while back here about running a home server for my clan but since then i ditched the idea, finally got round to renting a VDS. However i find i have a small problem. Maps won't download at more than 21KB/sec. I tried using the sv_downloadurl convar to have them download via my website (also on the same server but ive seen me fill my full 800KB/sec off the server via apache). It has 100mbit internet (symmetrical) so it shouldn't be an issue.

Any suggestions appreciated, cheers

Apache is the web server app I use. Its the most commonly used HTTP hosting app used the world over and has more than twice the usage of anything competing with it. Its open-source too. My point I was making is that theres definately something wrong with SRCDS when I can fill my entire 8meg internet speed at just over 800KB/sec when downloading from the web server but never more than 30KB/sec from SRCDS on map downloads.

Yea compress your maps. However, it's still not a good idea to download from the same server as the game server.

ok, i wanted to sure i understood what you meant. the download speed from srcds is limited by the rate in your cfg. thus, the need to use apache. if you setup apache and are still only getting 30kb/s then fast downloading is probably not working and you are likely downloading directly from srcds. check your apache logs to verify.
