I dont own a quad core, so I cannot help much...
but have you ever tried not binding the servers to specific cpus? I have never ever seen any positiv effects with this, but oftenly negative. Tust the linux scheduler to do the right thing :-)

So is that post with the linux kernel compile on the first page from 2008 the most current? Not sure what I should be following if I'm going to do this.

Hello,

(sorry for my bad english, i'm french Sad )

I try to use your kernel's configuration. But i can't patch the kernel before using your configuration.

My server :
  • P4 duale core @ 2ghz - 64 Bits - HT
  • 2 Gb Ram
  • Debian etch 64 bits
  • Only 2 game servers (12 slots, tick 100, srcetv on)
  • 100 Mbits

I try to do that :
Code:
cd /usr/src
mkdir kernel
cd kernel

I download the kernel, on kernel.org
Code:
wget ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.30.tar.bz2
tar jxvf linux-2.6.30.tar.bz2

I download the patch
Code:
wget http://www.zen-sources.org/files/2.6.30-zen1.patch.lzma
cd linux-2.6.30

But after ? i dont' know how to apply this patch to the kernel Sad
I don't know how to uncompress and patch with a *.lzma !

I do some search on google, and i install p7zip, but it doesn't seem works.

Thanks a lot !

you'll need to download and install LZMA utils. (http://www.tuukani.org). do a ./configure, make, and make install.

then, you'll just need to patch the kernel file using lzcat instead of zcat.

This is correct. You will need to use lzcat to apply the patch
Code:
lzcat patch.lzma | patch -p1

Have you done fps_max 1000 ?Smile

fps_max 0 is better

for 1000 fps you probably better use my howto ;-)
for 2000 fps you need more then kernel patching. the server has a limitation to 1000 fps built in, so you need to patch srcds (besides patching the kernel to be able to run at 1000 fps of course).

I know this is an old thread, but I followed the howto for a Centos5.3. It gets me to ~900FPS, but it's pretty unstable. Any ideas? It has a corei7 2.66GHz w/ 12GB of RAM.

Check CPU scaling, disable USB support in the bios if possible. Even with that done and everything else set up right sourcetv will still trash whatever you've worked hard for if you've got it running.

Ah, indeed, I do have stv running. If that is the case, I'll just ignore it.
