Kernel Compile (unexpected results)
#1
Well, this linux nub finally de-wussed himself, and compiled a new kernel hopefully more optimized for game servers than the old.

It seemed to go pretty smooth, I can get 900-something fps if i so choose, but rcon stats is also reporting idle servers using 30% cpu, but the 'top' terminal command shows them using 3% *should still be 0 for an empty Sad

Did i miss something in setting this up?

The machine is a Quad-core xeon 2.4Ghz.

The rcon cpu usage in source sucks. Don't worry, it's 3%.

hmm, maybe, but I am still worried that 3% idle will trans late to who knows how much more when full.

I reverted back to old. Sad for now at least.

I went for the latest kernel at could find, was that a good idea? Or is there a version that seems to work better than the rest?
The one i used was 2.6.26

edit.
I am definitely missing something. The servers take a lot longer to load, and a lot longer to change maps on the new kernel

Did you try using the makeold option? Or did you start new?

sounds like crappy disk performance, which would point to possibly not having a chipset specific driver compiled in or loaded. if using pata drives, do not use pata drivers from the sata/pata experimental menu. i have found those often perform like crap. use pata drivers from the ata/ide/rll menu.

if you are using pata drives, use hdparm to verify the settings are correct. if you are running in some slow pio/dma mode, it will drastically reduce drive throughput.

It's alright, I've decided that changing from 100hz to 1000 is absolutely silly.

Ok, when typing in top for each process, the percentage of cpu usage means how much of the total cpu usage( listed on top) is being used by the process. I know its confusing, but youll get used to it.
