Steam did away with the account creation.

So it is no longer necessary to have a Steam account to use this tool so you can go stright to the downloading of the files.
Quote:wget http://www.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin

This will download the latest verison of hldsupdatetool.bin

Then do a:

chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin

Then

./hldsupdatetool.bin

If it asks you any questions just type yes

then

./steam

Then do it again ( This assures that it is completely up to date)

./steam

Then run the following command line (Change cstrike to the mod of your choice) - But before you do this, do a pwd to make sure you are in the /home/carlos/hlds_l directory otherwise it may download it somewhere else. Also make sure you put that . at end of the command line.

./steam -command update -game <game> -dir .

And it will start downloanding and you will be good to go!

Exclamation
"Tutorial page need update!"

Couldn't agree with you more.
I was stuck for like 2-3 hours trying to
figure it out, and the worst thing is
that the Steam tutorial is still outdated.

4fingers, wat do u mean u have to put a . at the end? Does that . mean ur home directory? Can u still put /home/user/srcds instead of .?

if you create srcds and put steam binary in srcds -dir . will tell you to install it right there.

example, your current directory you're in is /home/cryotek/srcds -dir. will install it there.

Ah ok, cool...

What about accounts? Do we still have to create accounts or not?

only account you need to create is a normal linux user account on your server.

AH ok... so it wont work (i mean server wont show on steam) if u dont create account on linux? What happens if u install it with root instead of the user?

installing and running servers as root is a security risk.

As long as you install to a directory that "belongs" to the user you are logged in as you will be ok. If you create it in your user's home directory, you will be fine. SRCDS does not install anything outside of its base directory, so you don;t need root permissions at all.

AFAIK, srcds won't install as root. I could be wrong here though.
