btw: this vote will never give you a ranking of the best distributions, but a ranking of the most-used distributions. this may have very little in common!

We feel the need to throw our two cents in on the subject because we feel this really needs to be known.
The owner of Krillin's World, me, is indeed a Network Administrator and a Systems Engineer. Working with 100's of thousands of dollars in hardware and OSes and a solid history of IT Professional under his belt who's specialty is Network Security.
Ubuntu is a joke for HLDS and SRCDC to us. Speaking from 7 years of experience with Linux. Why use a derivative (Built On) of Debian. Ubuntu seems to require server operators to "reboot" after updating the system every single time. For uptime, Debian is by far the better choice hands down. Performance is another issue, let's go there now...
We were forced to make the switch to Debian when we ran into a problem with reinstalling Ubuntu 64bit a few years ago. It was running with a 32bit then we 'updated' to the 64. Something went wrong with the host and we had to reinstall Ubuntu 64. When using the 64 bit directly as there is a problem which Ubuntu cannnot and will not fix when you add your server files to your install and try to run them. You try to launch your server and the OS reported the files were not found!?! They were extremely slow in getting the matter addressed and from our stand point were in no hurry to get it resolved.
When we switched to Debian, players asked us what we did to our servers. We asked them "Why? What's the problem?" they replied "Nothing, we get better FPS and for some reason the graphics looked better!" We took this as a compliment and never looked back.
Debian is by far, IOHO, the best Linux Distribution for HLDS & SRCDS engines.
Krillin's World servers have been running Linux since March of 2005. We have tried what we could at the time in researching the subject. But we never needed anything more.
DEBIAN is the better choice for performance and up-time and friendly with 64 Bit unlike Ubuntu.
If you use Ubuntu as your choice, we have two words for you "Epic Fail."

We use a CentOS 5.7 install with a custom kernel. Secure, easy and most importantly, it gives stable fps.

I know linux is only suggested, but FreeBSD is probably the better ones out of all of them.. busy wait sleeping, etc.
