How many slots/servers on this box?
#1
Hello,

I have a box with
P4 2.6ghz
1gig of ram
80+ hard drive
Red Hat linux 9

How many game servers can I run on this?
How many slots?

If I could, which should I increase,
ram to 2gig or up the cpu to higher P4?
Dont have xeon as an option, right now.

Thanks!!!!

well.. should have no issues with say 60+ slots MAYBE, depends on the connection as well.

Try experimenting with what you have, use top to monitor the resources.

Thanks for the help!!!!

Are there any tweaks to help me get at least 60?
As for my connection, I am looking at one with 1000GB and another
with 2000GB.

Would Dual cpu actually help me double it? Ive heard some people say yes, others no.

What is "top" and where do i get it?

It's a program under Linux, ships with nearly any distribution. Open a command line and type 'top' (without the quotes), press enter and BEHOLD!! Wink

Dual processors CAN help, however, physical dual processors are more reliable than logical dual processors, logical being Intel CPUs with HT. hlds and srcds do not thread its process across mutliple cpus, however, most operating systems like Gentoo, red hat line(including fedora), all the major linux flavors and BSD flavors should assign the process to the less stressed out cpu if you catch what i am saying.

Is there a big difference in slots or servers per box
between dual and non-dual?

In other words, can I double my number with the dual xeon cpus?
Or will it bump up by just a few to a dozen slots?
Will I get 120 versus the 60 on the P4 box? Or just 70-80?

Im looking at either a P4 3.0 box or a dual XEON 2.8 or 3.0 box.
There is a big price diff between the two. I have to rent a dedicated box. So far the only way I can get the transfer that I want, I can only get it if i get a dedicated box.

well yeah.. because you're adding slots on 1 cpu, then slots on another cpu.. I would recommend having about 2GB of ram.

I recommend maxing at about 75-80% usage.

Wow, so then duals are really like having 2 boxes in 1?
If so, thats what Ive always thought, but read conflicting info
between this site and CS's forum.

2GB definitely! I just happened to add that to my P4 3.2 test box that I have at home last night and it helps a lot!

When you say 75-80%, are you talking about cpu or memory?

Thanks!

Its not so much as 2 boxeswell.. 2 uniproc boxes i suppose..
But yeah, more slots because you have an extra cpu to add more slots.
And, now that you asked,i'd say both. but keep more of an eye on your CPU usages.
