Running a Lag Free HL2 Server
#16
Yea thanks for the support. As for the tips, I know that celeron is faster than a pentium 4, but it really all depends on what FSB you have. I'm going to update the guide within a few days. Thanks for your help Smile

this isn't true.. i have a 2.9ghz celeron in my wifes computer.. celerons are still no where near as fast. but just to set that straight.. lol

i dont know if i have to put it here but i think you have to update a link in the downloads section

there is a newer version of mani, here is the link

That's nice that you share to others, but...
... sorry this guide is for total beginners and there are are some inaccuracies.

Windows XP Pro never will be better than Linux if you want to run a srcds on the minimal requirements without any noticeable lag.
Why?
Windows core eats your ram very effectively, tested Wink.
I got FTP, Proxy, HTTP Apache, MySQL, PHP, MRTG, iptables (routing internet connection on 3 computers) running on my Debian. I have 64MB RAM, CPU PIII 450MHz and I can get 5 players without lag with this all above services running.

Quote:I recommend at least a 1.5ghz processor or faster.
The frequency is not the determinant of the CPU speed !
Not novadays, when the structure of CPU is so complicated.

Example:
Celeron 420 1600MHz @ (200x9) 2128MHz with 512kB cache in Everest Home Edition tests is faster than P4 Extreme Editon 3,73GHz.
Pentium would be better when you have HTTP or SQL server, beacuse it needs the data caching, but Celeron is still faster in most cases.

PIII can be much faster than PIV.
Pentium D 2 x 3,2GHz is much slower in most cases than E4300 which is 2x1,8GHz.

Quote:I also recommend 512 MB of RAM or more.
When you know how to optimize your system, you can make 10 player server even on 128MB ram. The point is to close other unusefull services. Linux here is much better than Windows.

Quote:In addition to that, it is very user-friendly unlike Linux or Server Edition for the n00bs out there.

Windows got desktop, mouse and other server useless shit.
That's why its so user-friendly.

When you run server on Linux you dont install desktop (ex. Gnome, KDE), beacuse we want to get minimal RAM usage. We can do all from console or remote computer.
You dont want to watch a film on your server, huh?

Linux is just for people who have brain !
Windows for others, with and without brain Wink.

Quote:RAID is when you have 2 hard drives
No, RAID need minimal 2 hard drives.

Quote:and you put them togethor for a performance increase
You put them together mainly for data redundancy and for a performance increase

God damn it people if you want to know requirements of srcds just install it an mrtg or other statistics and check the CPU load, Ram usage, HDD Usage, Bandwith usage, and check what is the bad point of your server.
No one can tell you how many people can you get on your server until you wont check it alone.

This guide give the general think about the server, but there are some falsehoods and mistakes which can make people money spent unnecessarily on professional servers.

Thats opinion from me.
Hope it wont start war.

Yeah I agree with you Shezzy cept for two things. The whole OS war is total bullsh*t. Both linux and windows have their good and bad things. Its really just a matter of opinion.
Shezzy Wrote:Linux is just for people who have brain !

Yeah thats a bit harsh Big Grin. Then just a little thing, Celeron's suck at srcds. So yeah they might be faster....but they dont work well with srcds for some reason.

And did you notice how old this thread is?

Yeah that's true, but for srcds I hope that Linux is better due to less RAM usage.

Spartanfrog we were talking about that Celeron Smile. Its ripped C2D, Celeron is only old brand name that meant ripped Pentium. The whole structure is something different.
When someone say Celeron, everyone think that is shit based on P4 till s.423 to s.775 including the strongest one - Celeron D based on Cedar Mill.
Its typical mistake.

Quote:Linux is just for people who have brain !
Windows for others, with and without brain .
There is an logical error.
If Linux is only for people who have brain, then if Windows is for others it mean that its only for people without brain.
Sorry, it should be something like that:

Quote:Windows is for everyone, but Linux is only for people with brain. Wink

Ah, forgot to say. Sorry for my english, I am not native speaker.

Quote:And did you notice how old this thread is?
Sorry, I didnt noticed, but yeah its old Wink

Yeah Celeron's are great processors, I am not saying that. They just dont work well with SRCDS. They do not hold the same number of slots at the same cpu usage. They are fine for other things, just for SRCDS they dont work well. I didnt mean they suck in general Wink. I love to use windows and linux. Linux definitly is less RAM intensive but SRCDS is not a real RAM intesive program. I use windows for hosting my own servers, its fine, but if you were hosting thousands of servers, Linux would be better.

Sure, but I have only 64mb ram. Wink

Here is my mrtg test log:
http://78.88.116.4/mrtg/

System is 64MB ram and PIII 450MHz. Test server 6 slots CS:S running without big problem.
Sometimes there can be lag due to my connection. Got upload only 256kbps and I have family using it too, so when someone is sending/downloading something it can make lags.
It will be fixed soon, beacuse this server will be routing connection for another computers in my house.

When there is 6 players CPU load is about 35%. My ram is full, need to buy more Wink.

Now I need to check what mods should I install on my server to make it more secured and more playable.

EDIT:
As I said server is not playable due to unconfiguracy. Its not secured and all is worth shit Wink

As I said, SRCDS is not RAM intensive Wink. Also whats unconfiguracy, its not a word Wink.
