I'm lagging and I have absolutely no idea why...
#1
Hello,

I need someone to tell me whats wrong, when me and my brother play css on the same network.. we lag immensly. We never used to, it only started a few months ago.. thing is, i've TRIED EVERYTHING.. I even went as far as replacing my router...Thing is, we only lag when we're on teh server at the SAME time.. or playing css at the SAME time.. otherwise we have no problem..

Even with the new router that arrived today the lag just doesn't stop! I've upgraded firmware.. (btw the router is excellent for everything else, downlaoding.. streaming.. etc..)

If you can give me the solution to this ever lasting problem I'll worship you!

when you lagging, take a tracert to the server. See where the latency is coming from. that will tell you exactly whats causing it.

Ermmm, what's a tracert? :S Sorry, first I've heard of it..

Goto start, run, and in the box that appears, type cmd. Then you should be in command prompt. Now remember the IP of the server and in the command prompt type tracert <IP of Server>.

Shows the "steps" to getting to the server. So it can show where the lag is coming from.

This might be a old thread-ish; but I had this problem too. In the end my brother just quit css and I'm with virgin too, could never find the solution :/

Hmmm yeah, I have no idea how to use this tracert thing, I don't see how it can tell me what the problem is.. but I was looking to enter ED in a few days.. guess I won't be now.. well.. maybe I should quit Big Grin

I bet we can figure this out, just to ask a few questions.

Many ISPs throttle the bandwidth to avoid people from using their home connections as servers. Are you using a standard home connection, or do you pay more for business class?

Does it lag all the time, or just when more than X amount of players are connected?

If you connect via LAN, not Internet, does it lag? If so, it's a server problem. If not, it's an Internet problem.

What is the model of router and modem you are using? Some routers and modems are terrible for game servers.

What are the specs on your server? RAM, HD, Processor, etc.

Check out this page for a bunch of tips to run a lag-free server. Some help, some don't

Ok in reply to the above posts..
I pay for the XXL 20MB Virgin Media connection.. It only lags when me and my brother both play css at the same time.. I think it has something to do with Zblock..

We just tried playing on a 'Create Server' LAN game, We had latencies of 5 and 7 respectively Big Grin First time I've played with him cleanly for a long time..

Linksys WRT54GS router, the speed booster one.. I have an old NTL modem but i'm getting it changed.. I don't think its hardware based because me and my brother play FINE on LAN .. BTW this problem is when we are on any internet server.. not our own created server. Thanks..

(I'm thinking it may be a problem with zBlock maybe, because everyone else on the server we rent never lags.. )

I am from the UK btw..

Your own dedicated server, on your OWN network, will never lag.(unless you have big usage of cpu on your own computer)
It only sends the info to your router and back, if there are clients

It isn't zBlock, its proberly your internet provider, zBlock dont make you lag, it could make the server lag, but not you.

Code:
Can one of you be on the web and play css?

But when both plays css, happens what?

Its proberly your router Smile..
