AT&T U-Verse

hello, ive been trying to find someone who currently has att uverse as there ISP

currently i have WOWWAY as my proveder with the 6mb ultra pack and this was what i got on a speedtest i just did

Download Speed: 6501 kbps (812.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1085 kbps (135.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

i have been hosting a 14man 66tic for a bit over a year now amd havent really had any problems but was looking at uverse because they got a 10mb/1.5mb package and a 6/1 (not interested in it as its probably lower than what i got)

the only bad thing i heard about uverse is that it uses a interleaved signal and it creates a higher latency. would this be a problem? i cant find how much it raises it and what they are comparing there results to.

i read that ATT uses interleaved and fastpath, any chances that they could throw me on that instead?

i really would like to get the FIOS 15/15 package but theres no info on when thats coming to michigan...

im just trying to figure out if i should switch or not, any input would be great!

Hey man, I saw you havn't gotten any replies so I thought I'd give my oppinion, although I really do not have any experience with ATT or their U Verse product, maybe I can help anyways.

I wouldn't plan on the ATT U Verse being able to host that many more players, because it probably is not stable at 1.5mb upload.

Home connections really aren't made for hosting. Every company advertises a speed, but the connection is rarely at that speed...the advertised speed is just the maximum for your connection. My 10mb connection is always at 8mb, not 10, which is fine...but it just goes to show you don't always get the advertised number.

If you're able to get 14 players without lag on a 1mb connection that means you have a pretty good ISP and should probably stay with them.

If you switch to the U Verse with 1.5mb upload, you will probably only be able to squeeze an extra 2-4 players in there, it all depends on how stable ATT is. If the cost difference is worth 2-4 more players, go for it.

And another point, ISP's have different service everywhere. For example... someone with ATT in New York is going to experience it differently than someone with ATT in another state such as Ohio. The reason being they are the same corporation but the networks are different in different locations. So one person's ATT internet may be better than someone elses who is living in a different location... make sense?

Also, if this upgrade to ATT U Verse is going to cost a little money, why not just rent a game server from a company? Home connections are not made for hosting. The routing is not setup to support high performance hosting.
That's why companies house servers in data centers and host from there. The data centers are setup for mission critical applications (such as game servers).
For example you may have people experiencing loss or choke in your server, or a higher ping than they should be getting. This would all go away if you bought a server from a company who hosts in a professional data center. You can find some companies who charge about $1 per player, which isn't that bad, and I guarantee you'll have more players joining your game server because of the lower pings.

Lets face it, home connections aren't made for hosting. The pings will be higher than normal.

yea, i realize that a home connection isnt necessarily good for hosting a game server. i mainly just do it for fun. i never really get any complaints about any lag or high pings, i have a few people that connect from arizona to my server in michigan and there ping never goes about 65. i rarely get someone that complains and when they do, i check their rates and thats usually the problem, and tell them how to fix it.

my upload is very stable compared to others that ive seen. ive FTPed a few somewhat large files to others and the speed stays very constant at 130-135 kb/s (the 1.1mbps upload) for the whole time

the uverse price is actually a bit cheaper from what ive seen, the 6/1 anyway, and im sure the 10/1.5 isnt much more, i just dont know about the stability of it.

but pretty much its just for me and a group of people that i been playing with for a while, there from all around, mostly NY, CT, and canada. got quite a few regulars that come in a lot and enjoy it.

i would rent but im not even 17 yet (1 more week!) and dont really have a steady income, need my own car before i dish out money for a server. i just enjoy learning about how stuff works and like messing around with eventscripts programming.

thanks for the reply!
