CentOS 5 500FPS

So I got a default install of CentOS 5.1 on my server and installed srcds. With +fps_max 0, I was getting between 333 and 500fps. I thought centos was default 1000hz kernel. Is the kernel 1000hz? If so, why was my server not running at 1000fps?

Depends on the kernel version, from what I've seen 5.1 runs 1000hz by default.
