FPS drop
#1
Hey guys.

I've been having this problem for a while....Basically my servers have fps booster running and every now and again the fps drops to about half on all servers. You can notice it the most on the match server which is boosted to 500FPS.

This is running on Q9300 2.5Ghz, 4GB DD2, 500GB (7200rpm) on Windows Server 2003.

Any help is much appreciated.

At least your servers show up on the public list -_-.

How many servers are you running on the one machine?

First core has a 40 slot @ 33 tick zombie server.

Second core 24 slot @ 66 tick + 16 slot @ 66 tick.

Third core 12 slot @ 100 tick + 14 slot @ 66 tick.

Fourth core 64 slot @ 66 tick however we haven't had people on this server yet.

Might just be the silly Intel CPU problems. Does the tickrate drop?

Yes, only very slightly.

Sometimes you can feel it dropping, sometimes you can't.

Very low.

When we are on the match server late at night and all the pubs are empty it still does it....

It seems to happen on our 100 tick match server a lot more often and worse. The tickrate seems to drop really quite low on the match server, like sometimes 50 tick.

Not cool, anyone got any ideas?

regular system restarts?

also, have you stripped all non essential services?

The box auto restarts everyday at 5am.

I have used the "running a lag free hl2 server" guide...

I'm having a similar issue. I don't even have my server ping-boosted and the FPS drops really low but the cpu staying nice and low around 30%. I can try boosting FPS but last time they gave me problems... but that was before I got hyper-threading working.

id just advise on using linux, i find fps much easier to stablise on it. Get the kernel timer at 333fps and your sorted. Windows generally spikes alot more and when maps change etc or restart it uses more cpu. In linux it is less noticable i find. Eventhough your still not with me hazz, give me a msg on steam friends id help you with the changeover.

Switching over to Linux isn't really an option on our box.
Technically it's possible but it's not work the time to switch over. The server is also used as an all-purpose windows server whenever we need to use a windows server for something.

Someone else said about moving over to Linux....The work involved would be probably too much to justify it till I've tried more things with Windows.

There must be something running on Windows.....isn't there anymore guides to setting up gameservers on Windows?

Also, how do these gameserver providers go about doing it, I know some of them use Windows and they're fine.
