Why does map of fresh install differ.
#1
I play source like every day. I have all the latest maps on my comp here. I built another comp and installed source using hldsupdatetool. When it's loaded and I try to connect, I get your map de_dust.bsp differs fromt the servers. Did they update the maps awhile ago or something? I know my map is good because I use it everyday. And the map I just downloaded with hldsupdatetool should be good because i just did it yesterday. I don't get it. I don't have maps in cstrike/maps folder on the computer i play with. What's wrong with the server?

Replace the map of the server with yours, or delete the one on your game PC and let it download the one from your server (you can always store a copy of your current map if you fear that it won't work with other servers).
May the Source be with you...

I don't have any maps in the cstrike/maps folder on the gaming computer. But I play everyday so the maps are somewhere. I even tried extracting them from the gcf file on the gaming computer and put them on the server. Still doesn't work.

Those maps have to be on your gaming PC though, without them it is impossible for you to play. Try looking here:

..\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\<name>\counter-strike source\cstrike\maps

they aren't there, correct. I play on other servers though and everything works just fine. So why wouldn't they be there then?

I have no idea... Try searching for them, in the search field of the Windows search type '*.bsp' (without quotes) and make it look on all your hard drives.

they aren't there. no maps exist. Doesn't make sense but I just joined a server and everything works fine. I've looked for these maps before and can't only find them embedded in the counter-strike source shared.gcf file.

I just dragged de_dust.bsp from the server and put it in my cstrike/maps on the gaming comp and i still get that error.

standard cs:s maps downloaded by steam will not show in your client cstrike/maps directory. You shouldn't have any maps in that directory except for custom maps. Only the server will have all maps in the cstrike/maps directory.

does this happen with this map on just one server or does it happen on all servers?

only happens on mine. Haven't had a problem with any other server. This is like my 4th time trying to install it cuz I keep getting this error.

What I would do is delete from the server Installrecord.blob (linux, I'm not sure whats in the windows server version), and all files associated with the map (de_dust?), to include maps/graph/de_dust.ain, de_dust.txt, de_dust.nav, and anything else related to that map (except for .res files), then run the update command again to redownload the deleted files.

Weird? When was the last time you restarted your steam client?

that error is usually because one of 2 problems, the map files on the server is messed up or the map files on the client is messed up. but since you said that you don't get that error on other servers, that would lead me to believe that the server is the one with the messed up files.

are you sure that you got all related files deleted from the server with exception to the .res files? i.e. you looked through maps/soundcache/, etc. And you don't have anything in your client cstrike/maps directory with exception to a graphs and soundcache directory.

another possibility is that your connection to your server is bad and the info being sent/received from the server is bad.

This is with almost all maps. Not just de_dust

correct. that's why this really boggles me. If you can, try connecting.

Doesn't make any sense to me. It never worked either when I installed dedicated source server thru the steam client.

Is there any place where I can download these maps besides from the updatetool? anyone know a website?

I just got de_prodigy and de_piranesi to work. But no luck on the others.
