srcds.com copyright infringement?

I recently received this email:

We have to notify you of the fact that srcds is a registered trademark of the VALVe Corporation. Therefore we are forced to request the ownership of the domain. If you will not transfer the domain within 2 weeks we will have to contact our lawyer.

We'd like to thank you for the effort. Please be careful using trademarks in domains next time. We ordered sourceds.com and linked it the "A" Record of your site. Hereby I give you our permission to operate from that domain.

I wonder what VALVe is planning to do with this domain name. Maybe it will be a larger resource, maybe not. I had some plans expanding and I am not planning to stop them so I guess I'll use the domain they prepared for us. It better be more important than our community though heh. If you are unable to reach srcds.com you can always try sourceds.com.

It could be that they don't plan to do anything with it al all.

As they say, srcds is a registered trademark of them, and they are required by law to protect that trademark. So if you registered srcds.com (doesn't matter if you knew about the trademark or not) then VALVe is compelled to make that domain their's.

Unfortunately you can't do much about it. Like you said, the best you can do is co-operate with them.
