2.4 to 2.6 - is it worth it?
#1
Just a quick question

I currently have the 2.4 kernal installed (2.4.20-021stab022.11.777-enterprise)and was wondering if anyone knew any advantages to upgrading to 2.6 espcailly for srcds or hlds.

Would I see a noticable differance or just a few small changes here and there on my game server?

Thanks

I went from 2.4 to 2.6 kernel with debian.
Main reason was for the server fps.

I've noticed quite a bit in server response with my kernel being at 2.6.11. but i guess it depends if you use stock (also known as vanilla sources) or use a patch set to gain better performance. But upgrading JUST for gameserver performance is bad. Upgrading also fixes some exploits thats found in the 2.4.x tree.

Ok thank you, Ill expand my question now

As you said upgrading just for the game server isnt good. Therefore Would I be able to edit my 2.4 kernal so that I would get a faster fps or server response time, that you get in 2.6.

probably not, unless you knew how to code in c. only thing you can really do to your kernel is remove EVERYTHING that can be used by modules. The smaller the kernel is, the less memory it takes to run it. You will need to build somethings into the kernel though, so just don't modulize everything
