Linux vs Windows 98
#1
Hello,
Recently I have fixed my good old windows 98 with 10GB free space on it. (lol)

I don't do anything with it so I thoughd I could host a little server on it. Rolleyes

The only thing that the computer will do is hosting a source dedicated server then. So which operating should I use then for the best performance?
Windows 98 or Linux?

I don't have any experience with linux (but I learn fast so that's not a point) but I don't now which Linux I should choose (if I should choose linux in the first place) Ubunto or something?

(ALOT) of thanks in advance.

Jesse

I don't know anything about Linux but I'm sure it will do a better job than Windows 98, I'm not even sure if SRCDS supports it anymore...

I know most Linux servers use Ubuntu or Centos. Theres a good guide on how to set a server up on linux on the main website so you should be fine Big Grin

I still had one question btw:
I think i'll go for Ubuntu, but what's the easiest way to install it over my Win 98?
Should I format my win98 first or should I use Instlux?
Any tip would be appreciated. Smile

Thanks again. Big Grin
I still have one last question:
When I look at the Ubuntu website, I see min specs: 256MB RAM.
My win 98 has this specs:
Intel Pentium III, 450Mhz
64MB RAM

I guess I can't run it then. Which other Linux version could run fine on my computer?
Because I don't know so much about the Linux distributions yet.

I honestly don't know really. I would just pick up some more ram, its so cheap now. Ebay ftw.

Thanks, again(!)
I'll buy some RAM, it's very, very cheap indeed!
Always thought it would cost much more. xD

Running a server with 450 Mhz really is not logical.
I wouldn't mess with it. However I would chose Linux over Windows 98 because a Windows 98 computer on the internet is a HUGE security risk.

Please do not PM me for server related help
