Server config help
#1
Hello

I want to run a clan server for 5 on 5 matches. The spec. of the machine is a 3,06 p4 with 512ram and the connection is 8Mbit down and 2Mbit up. I'm running Fedora Core 3, glibc 2.3.3, kernel 2.6.9. The server is located behind a netgear firewall, thus it's in a DMZ

After searching the web I'v found that the general tip is to change the sv_maxwidth and sv_minwidth rates. I'v tried this but we do not get rid of the lagg. The lagg starts with about seven people on the server. I really do think that these specs should suffice for a 10 slot server. With about 5 people everything is fine.

Please help me with any suggestions of how to configure the server to get ridd of this problem.

When there are some people playing on your server, you should run the top command on the box to see the CPU/memory usage, then you know if the hardware is holding you back or not.

Offtopic: could you post the bogomips of your CPU? Smile (just run 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' in the shell, last line gives the bogomips)

So thats your quoted speeds from the ISP? What is the actual speed? http://www.dslreports.com/stest

I am using almost the same setup as you. Only with 1gig of ram and a mere 6000/768 DSL connection. But I dont start seeing lag untill I hit 12 players. If you are truely getting that upload speed, there should be no problem at all.

Didn't your post mentioned a 1.4Ghz CPU at first? In this case, whitch that CPU (3.06Ghz instead of 1.4Ghz) the amount of players you are trying to run shouldn't be a problem. (by the way, the bogomips looked kinda high for a 1.4Ghz in the first place Toungue)

Goofy, u'r right, I got it wrong the first time, then edited to the right speed.

Gbud, if u have almost the same spec as me, it would be helpful if you would share your server.cfg with me, maybe I can get some tips from that. 2Mbits are the stated speed, but I would be very surprised if it would be lover than your 768, and you manage 12 players.. But I shall test it.

I'm wondering if the router can be a bottleneck, what do u think?

Tested the upload speed now, it's between 0,8 - 1Mbit. Shouldn't that be enough?
