How Many Slots?
#1
Hi there,

Looking at renting a dedicated server, and wondering how many slots of any source game it can hold. Assume no changes to tickrate, rates or FPS boosting. Server specs are:

AMD X2 3800+ (1.8Ghz) 1Mb Cache - Dual Core
1GB DDR 400
Windows Server 2003

I know this isn't an excellent machine, but i'm going for entry level right now.

If anyone could give me some rough estimates for this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Eh should get 6t0-70ish slots but that cache is small. I would only go with 45-50 because of that and that when the cpu load gets above 80%, which it will do because of the l2 cache, lag happens. Go with 50 slots. That is 100 tickrate slots.

50 slots? Excellent, that was what I was hoping for. Not much I can do about the cache, these specs are part of an offer and its 'take it or leave it'. I'm going to take it.

I was talking about CSS slots.....And I dont think it would that much of a difference. Maybe 40 but really whats the point of hosting an extra 8 slot server lol

Thanks for all your help, i've now ordered it. I can upgrade anything I want, would 2GB RAM make a huge difference?

Nope, better changing the processor. 1 gig can cover about 5X20 servers.

TF2 uses a fair bit more resources than the standard source engine. Our TF2 32 slot rotation server, which is full allmost 24/7 also uses around 300MB RAM...

I agree about the RAM usage. I had 1Gb RAM and came close to making a boo boo by reaching 85% RAM used with 2 32 TF2 slot servers.

What about GoldSRC based games? I assume they consume a lower amount of resources. If I can host 50 Source slots, approx how many GoldSRC? I'm trying to work out some pricing based on relative resource usage.
