Laggy Server
#1
I have been working for awhile on a home server, finally getting it running and showing up on DOD:S server list. I just have one problem. The server becomes extremely laggy when ever someone else joins the game. I can join and play fine, getting a ping of about 25 from only about a mile away, but as soon as someone else joins my ping jumps to 70 and the game becomes very laggy, sort of two steps foward then one back. I am NOT playing the game on the same machine as I am running the server.
Here are the specs for the Server:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ Water cooled
OS: Windows XP
Ram: 2048 MB
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 512 MB

I am running a 12 man server at 100 tick
My internet connection is:
download- 8394 kp/s upload- 977 kp/s
The server has an FPS of about 512
I have windows media player running in the background and SRCDS.exe is set to high priority in Task Manager

If anyone has any solutions/suggestions on fixing this it would be greatly appreciated.

Your upload speed is not capable of running 100tick at 500fps. Try 33tick at 250fps, if you still run into lag keep lowering the fps, or just co-locate your server Smile.

Well FPS does not affect bandwidth, the tickrate does. 977 kbps pers second can hold only 6 100 tickrate slots, then what is your connection speed to your router or your modem or whatever? Is it ethernet? Wireless? Also since you are playing, you are connected to the internet so that takes up some upload speed. If you have cable chances are you are also not getting 977 constantly, it dips lower and higher. Pretty much, your download speed is wayyyyy too low. Using that connection, neglecting if it dips higher/lower, 33 Tickrate you can get 24 slots and for 66 tickrate about 10ish slots. Dont worry about FPS your server hardware can handle 512. I got pretty much the same machine, but with better bandwidth and i get 60 100 tic slots at 512.
P.S. You got your upload and download speeds messed up. Usually Download is higher, upload lower. Probably 977 is your upload. You could be right though but that would be really wierd.
P.S.S If you decide to change your internet, get FIOS. I dont like Verizon but Fios for 20/5 its like $40 monthly? Dunno what your paying now though.
Wow I typed a lot! Smile

I am playing the game at my friends house, the server is located at mine.
I have a 100 mbps cable internet connection, also my upload is 977 kp/s, I think you just read my specs wrong, anyway I will change my server to 66 tic and 10 slots and see how that works,
Thanks

How do you have a 100 mbps connection with cable and then say you have 977 kb/s upload. Or are you saying your router and ethernet are capable of 100 mbps?

My Local Area Connection status tells me my speed is 100 Mbps, http://www.speedtest.net/ is where I am getting the other info.

That's just your port speed.

Wait what? The 100 Mbps is how he is connecting to his actual speed. Like a ethernet wire.......
Well if you are playing at your friends house, it still wont make that much of a difference. I could have sworn that you didnt have download labled before. Seeing how it says you didnt edit it, I must be going crazy Toungue. Sorry for saying you made a mistake. Anywho let us know how the lower tickrate does.
